Unusual "From" header

Thank you for your comments, Thomas.  I agree that the "From:" address is totally uncalled for.  It seems also to be rather ineffective, if it was meant to be some sort of advertising.  The message in question was for validation of a web-site registration, so I would have thought that it would have been important to be delivered without being rejected.  Anyway, messages with this characteristic seem to be rare, so it doesn't really matter too much.

This is only peripherally a Mercury issue, but it does cause problem to the filtering that I am applying with Mercury.  It may relate to the earlier posting "mercury sends mail in response to malformed from address".

I am receiving mail from an address, which is configured as follows:

From: "OCWorkbench Forum | C3 Fair - Computers, Communications & Consumer Electronics 2009 Fair | IT Show 2010 Price List Offers Brochures Flyers | Android phones | twitter, facebook, SEO, Investment, USA, UK, Germany, France, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines" <>

It seems to me that there should be a valid RFC822 address within the angle brackets at the end of this rather long From line.  Maybe this is a means of making the message unreplyable.

Does anyone know whether messages are supposed to include valid return addresses?  I am using my ISP's SMTP server (and the Mercury D client),  but I wonder if Mercury S would reject messages such as this?

Thank you

Gordon

As long as the total length of the header is good  Mercury would not have trouble receiving the message.  I do know that PMail does not like a personal name that long and all the other mail clients I checked did not all me to enter the full string.

FWIW, I consider this to be totally uncalled for and is not even readable in the mail listings in any mail client I tested.   The quoted field is 289 characters long, and IIRC the RFC says that this is limited to 128.

That said, here's the Raw view of a message where I dumped a 101 file into the Mercury queue and sent to another Mercury host.
