the claim that my username and password are unacceptable was when using Port 25.

I am not sure whether this may apply in your case but maybe worth checking.

I had my Internet Service Provider, NOT email provider, blocking all Port 25 (smtp) traffic for ADSL connection if the smtp traffic was not directed through their own SMTP server. In this way I could not access e.g. my own smtp mail server outside the ISP domain or any other smtp servers. Supposedly  to "prevent spammers sending unsolicited email" ... well ...[*-)]  This blocking was only done when a dynamic IP address was assigned by the ISP. The only way around it, with my ISP, was to get/pay a static IP address then they would allow Port 25.

I recall getting quite strange error messages which left me and even the support puzzled ...

Cheers

Hi folks

Running 4.51 and have switched provider, so need to send outgoing emails via Sky's SMTP - Server Host Name "smtp.tools.sky.com". Ihave set the Server TCP/IP port to "465" as advised, but I just cannot get mail to go. [^o)]

I have tried just about all the possible variations using "Never", "Via STARTTLS" and "Via Direct SSl connect" (Sky guys can't help as they do not offer advice for Pegasus). It requires login info, which I offer via "Login to the SMTP server" but the best I can get is that the Username & Password are not accepted. I am fairly sure they are correct.

Anyone got any had similar probs or have any suggestions here?   I have also tried reverting to Port 25 with no luck either. [:(]

This server responds to port 25 as follows:

220 mx.google.com ESMTP 28sm74759148vws.1
ehlo thomas
250-mx.google.com at your service, [209.128.94.2]
250-SIZE 35651584
250-8BITMIME
250-STARTTLS
250-ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES
250 PIPELINING

Looks like a typical GMail type server, might try the GMail setup.

-SMTP STARTTLS -

  Server host name: smtp.gmail.com
  Server TCP/IP port: 587
  SSL/TLS: via STARTTLS
Enable server certificate fingerprint tracking: checked
SMTP Authentication: Login to the SMTP server using POP3
username/password (the GMAIL-POP3-definition has been chosen)

- SMTP via SSL -

  Server host name: smtp.gmail.com
  Server TCP/IP port: 465
  SSL/TLS: via direct ssl connection
Enable server certificate fingerprint tracking: unchecked
SMTP Authentication: Login to the SMTP server using POP3
username/password (the GMAIL-POP3-definition has been chosen)

In any case provide us with a session log of the failed connection if this does not work.

Hi

Tried various options again, including your suggestions and doing through GMail.

Here is a log report of one attempt:-

If I use Port 465, I get "socket read timeout", so the above example with the claim that my username and password are unacceptable was when using Port 25.

I have trebbled checked my username and password by logging into my Sky Emaili account via their website (webmail), so I know they are correct. I have tried adding "@sky.com" to the username which does not change how the tests react either in Pegasus nor at Sky's own website.

They are ready for a STARTTLS it was not completed.   Should have looked something like this.

11:36:10.718 >> 0030 220 2.0.0 Ready to start TLS\0D\0A

You have now compromised your username and password since anyone can read this with a Base64 decoder, took me a couple of seconds to decode this.  In any case you need to have this in hand when you talk to the ISP about what username and password they are looking for when using ESMTP AUTH.

Have you tried using port 587 instead of port 25?
