In loose terms, IMAP is a protocol for reading email, as is POP.
With POP3, the client connects to the server and downloads the email to the local machine for reading and storage, removing it from the mailbox on the server (usually).
With IMAP4, the mail is stored on the server and can be read, replied to and organised into folders by separate (and multiple) mail clients on different PC's.
MercuryI is the IMAP4 server module, and the help provides info on setting it up.
I would suggest setting up a test user on Mercury, and connecting to it via IMAP4 with your mail client to see how it works, and work out how you could use it for your needs.
Be aware that the same mailbox/username can be accessed by both POP3 & IMAP.
