Connection control - alternative route to ISP - SMTP server problem

Mercury V4.6,

MercuryS:  strict local relaying enabled; Connection control: all local LAN all addresses allowed

Normal routing to ISP is via the DSL router on the local LAN.  This works faultlessly

 


The DSL link went down recently, so I used a mobile phone connection to the ISP.  Receiving mail via POP3 was no problem, but all outgoing messages were rejected as follows:

The local mail transport system has reported the following problems
it encountered while trying to deliver your message:

This occurred despite the following Mercury configuration changes:

MercuryS:  all relaying restrictions unticked; Connection control: address range including the mobile phone IP address 'ALLOWED'  added

MercuryP:  Connection control: address range including the mobile phone IP address 'ALLOWED'  added

Despite this, Mercury would only download POP3 incoming mail.  All SMTP mail was rejected 'Relay access denied'

 

Any ideas what the problem is?

Put MercS & MercP back the way you had them (quickly) they have no relevance to this problem.

The issue is that your SMTP client module (MercC) is now connecting to your ISP SMTP server from a "foreign" network that is not allowed to relay mail through it.

You may be able to relay after authenticating (options in MercC config) or it may simply be denied, that is entirely up to your ISP's policy.

Probably does not like the connecting from MercuryC but I'm just guessing.  We need to see a session log to really see what has happened.

BTW, you really should turn that MercuryS relaying restrictions back on.  It has nothing to do with the problem and if this server is accessible from the outside world it will be a target for spammers in no time at all.

You bet! I removed strict anti-relaying only for the test period while trying to get SMTP to work.

Mobile connectivity to ISPs is commonly used in South Africa due to the lack of DSL in many parts of the country, and bi-directional email connections (usually from Outlook etc) work fine.

I've asked the ISP support desk for comment - if anything of value arises, I'll report back.
