restoring pegasus on new computer

Oh, yeah, now I have my signatures and Spamhalter data - it will be interesting to see what gets sent to the spam folder.

I know this has been addressed before, but my situation is somewhat different. I have used an internet based program to back up all my files. I have a new computer and installed the latest version of Pegasus on the new machine. I would like to restore the backed-up files to my new version of Pegasus. Do I have to have folders with the same names for my saved mail on my new setup? For example, my old computer has a folder for mail named "REPS". Do I need to create a folder for saved mail with the name "REPS" on my new computer set up.

Then I am not too sure of the file structure in Pegasus. What are the sub-folders? I see three folders; Mail, Pmail and Programs. Each of those has sub-folders. I guess I am trying to say I am unsure where to restore files from my previous version of Pegasus. Help!

You just copy the old directory data to the new setup.

1.    Use Help | About Pegasus Mail | Info new system and note the HOME and NEW mail directories.  By default these are the same and are c:\pmail\mail\admin.

2.    Use Help | About Pegasus Mail | Info on the old system and note the HOME and NEW mail directories.  These by default are also c:\pmail\mail\admin.

3.    Exit WinPMail on both systems.

4.    Copy all files EXCEPT pmail.ini from the old systems mail directory to the new systems mail directory.

5.    Run WinPMail on the new system.  You should have all of your folders and addressbooks from the old system.

Skipping number 2 is the problem beginning. You have the restored files in \mail and where  they need to be in the current setup is in ..\mail\admin location. It looks like you had older single user setup with older version and now you have a new install with default \pmail\mail\admin as home mail box location. It is going to take some careful work to correct things. Are there messages that have been received in the interim and are they in new mail folder or are they in message folders in the new setup?

 It would be helpful to see the output of Help, About, Info button display to start with.  It would also, just to sure, to have a directory listing of all *.pmm files in c:\pmail and below to verify where the message folder data files are located for sure - they are only a part of the total  package but very useful info, Also a directory listing of any *.cnm files (new messages)  in c:\pmail and below subdirectories on the old and the new setup also.

Just for security - do a backup of c:\pmail and below before moving or altering things. The old contents of \mail probably also contain address books you may want to restore also. The new setup will have books in c:\pmail\mail\admin location and which set of files do you really want currently?

The only messages in New Mail are the 3 standard "Peg Mail Basics, Welcome, and Sources of Help."

I made a zip file of the PMAIL7 directory.

I have not created address books in the new setup.  As soon as I started the new Pegasus and saw the standard new installation folders and messages, I closed the Pegasus application and headed over here!

Nest you need to get all those .pmm and .pmi file pairs, except the few below \default, that make up message folders and index of same file name moved to your Home mail box location. Then you must use win explorer or other file manager tool to make sure all the moved files are not marked read only at OS system level.

 The tree structure is nearly impossible to import. About the best the files can assist with is information to use while reconstruction your trays and structure. Most say to just create it all new and don't try with any old existing file from a former configuration and machined and maybe winpmail version.

Network cofiguration was contained in the old pmail.ini + the *.pnd files. The  pmail.ini contained basic user configuration plus an additonal section for each identity if any used. Wholesale import of the old  pmail.ini will not work and paths are different now. Ok to use to copy or research some information and  pointers but not the whole file. The *.pnd files contain the POP and SMTP information (Tools, Internet options) and it is usually easier to recreate the information than to try to import the old.

The address book(s) are a pair of files *.pm! index and  *.pmr data file. Copy your old ones to your new \admin location. If you had any system wide book come back here for information if

necessary as that one is handled differently and location is different.

Distribution lists were *.pml files and the old ones can be copied to your new \admin location.

Watch out for spelling errors and any typo<G> they have plagued me my whole life. Typo errors and extra spaces can make even the simple into a long and involved headache sometimes.  I know<G>.

It might be worth a try: For Spamhalter copy the words4.db3 file (in some cases this file may cause a crash, though); filter rules are contained in files named WINPMFU?.PM (where the question mark is replaced with varying characters), if folders cannot be found for moving or copying messages the respective rules will show up as red lines in the rule editor. BTW: For details about Pegasus Mail's file types go to Han v.d. Bogaerde's page.

The basic new mail, on open, rules set is winrules.pmc file. You can inspect it in plain text editor. Other rules are *.pmc files. The information will help you formulate new rules or refresh your memory. In order for old rules to work correctly all the id numbers must still be the same and all paths must be the same and we know that is not true now.
