Extra signature images displayed in replies with signatures added upon message creation

Sharkfin: You are exactly right; the image is appearing at it's intended position in the signature and also at the top of the quoted text.  My guess is it is happening because Pegasus is embedding the definition of the image in the email in one place and the placement of the image someplace else.  Upon replying, that definition is manifesting itself as the actual image placement so it is effectively placing the image twice.  That is only my guess at hos this is working behind the scenes.  I had tried a few things with the logo along the lines you suggested: placing the image in an HTML table, adding blank lines or characters after it, and I just tried moving it all the way to the top of the signature, but in all cases the result is the same: the signature looks like it is supposed to but the extra image shows up at the top of the replied text.

Thomas:  I had not thought of using Mercury and the filtering rules, but that is a good idea.  From what I see, Mercury would only be able to add a signature at the very end of the email message, which I can already do with Pegasus and is not a problem.  The problem arises when trying to "top post" the signature.  I could achieve this by placing some unique text in the place I'd like the signature to go and then have Mercury "find/replace" that text with the signature code, but I did not see a "find/replace" option in the filtering ruleset.

Hello:

I've been asked to create a nice rich-text signature for all email users.  The signature has a couple hyperlinks and the company logo at the bottom.  We initially had some crashes when using the signatures but have fixed them using this conversion tool:

http://community.pmail.com/files/folders/community_add-ons_for_pegasus_mail/entry18437.aspx

One problem remains.  When replying to an email that has the signature block, the reply email ends up with an extra instance of the logo image at the top of the quoted text, right after the custom header line of the reply.  Only the recipient of the email gets this; the image does not show up when the sender creates the reply.  It only does it with signatures added to the message with the reply; if the signatures are added after the message is sent they are OK.  I would like to have the option of "top posting" the signature because that is what most people are doing nowadays, and it helps prevent the signature stack-up we see at the bottom of long email threads.  Can anyone confirm this, or tell me of a fix or workaround?  Thanks in advance for your help!

Try these options, one for replies and one for new messages.

Tools | Options | Sending mail "Add this variant of the default signature upon message creation"

If you would prefer to have your signature added to the message at the time you edit it instead of at the time the message is sent, check this control, which will enable the list box containing the various signature variants in the set. Choose the one you would like Pegasus Mail to add when the message editor window is created.

Tools | Options | Messages and replies  "For replies, place the cursor on an initial blank line"

When this control is checked, Pegasus Mail will insert a blank line at the top of your replies and will position the cursor there, ready for you to begin typing.

Tools | Options | Messages and replies "If also inserting a signature, insert it just below the blank line"

This option will become available when "...place the cursor on an initial blank line" is enabled. If this option is checked and the "Add this variant of the default signature upon message creation" option in your Signatures preferences is also enabled, then your signature will be inserted at the top of the message, just below the point where you type your reply, but above the text of the original message. This practice is known as top posting in Internet-speak, and may be considered unacceptable on some more traditional mailing lists.

Hi, Thomas.  Yes, those are the options I selected to get the signatures to appear in the message at create/reply time.  The problem is that when replying, an extra instance of the image appears in the reply text to the recipient.  If both users are using Pegasus with the same "insert signature for replies" setting, the image will appear at the top of the quoted text of each reply volley, right after the line: "On 2 Mar 2010 at 8:17, *** wrote:".  After a message is bounced back and forth between the two users several times, there are many extra images through the message thread.  If I can find what is causing this rogue image to appear and remove it, everything will be prefect!

You've noticed the basic problem with using this sort of system.  The signature and graphic is part of the message and when you reply you get the original signature and graphic in the message.  That's why I add this sort of thing to the outbound messages only using the "Inserting text into a message" Mercury outbound filter rule.  At least with this system the internal mails to local users do not have the problem of multiple signatures.  The only other method is for the user to manually remove the signatures and graphics from their replies.  From the help:

One of the more powerful actions a rule can take is to insert text into a mail message. This can be used to add corporate disclaimers to outgoing messages, to indicate that particular messages have been processed by the mail system or just about any other purpose. The process of inserting text into a message is actually very complicated, but Mercury is quite smart about it and can handle all the most common cases. When you create a rule with an action that inserts a text fragment, you provide the rule with the name of a text file containing the text it should add. If you wish, you can create a second file in the same location and with the same name, but with the extension .HTM, containing simple HTML text that Mercury should insert into HTML documents. Mercury will insert the text version of the file into plain text message parts, and the HTML version into HTML parts (it is inserted immediately before the </HTML> tag at the end of the message). If you do not provide an HTML version of the text, Mercury will insert the text version in a <BLOCKQUOTE> section of the message, which is probably adequate for most situations. Note that if you provide an HTML part, it can include most HTML formatting except for graphics.

I may be wrong, but my impression is that the problem is not that the signature of the original message gets quoted in the reply (as per usual operation), but rather that an extra copy of the logo is magically appearing in a strange place within the reply.

My best guess is that the logo is somehow "attached" to the wrong paragraph or something. Can you reproduce this behaviour if the logo is placed in an alternative position in the signature? Perhaps try putting it between the links or at the top of the signature or aligned right or something. Just for testing purposes, mind.
