Can't find my mail folder for backup

Vista "protects" you by putting files into "aliased" directories and then intercepts program requests so that the programs "just work"

Look here:

 C:\Users\Jeffrey\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Pegasus Mail\MAIL\ADMIN

Replace "Jeffrey"  with whatever username you use.

This is where my data is and I have used to back-up / restore numerous times.

Hello,

I am using WinPMail Version 4.41 (with German module) running VISTA in a standalone setting.

Now I want to backup my computer and I try to find the files containing all the mails.

I found some hints here in the forum about pmm files and so on.

But when I look at the harddisk, I can't find any pmm file containing mails (I searched

the hole disk). Pegasus informs me that my  home mailbox location is at:

C:\Program Files\PegasusMail\MAIL\Admin. When I look at this folder, there is nothing in it.

So where can I find the mail? Which files do I have to backup?

With best regards

Jens

C:\Program Files\PegasusMail\MAIL\Admin. When I look at this folder, there is nothing in it.

Something is wrong with the file listing.  If PMail says that's the home mail directory then that's where the files are located.  It looks like Vista does  not provide sufficient rights to the directory.

Thanks for Your answer,

I tried everything using Administrator rights.

Pegasus tells me, that I should have a file named FOL069E8.PMM with a size of 191572928 Bytes in the

folder C:\Program Files\PegasusMail\MAIL\ADMIN but when I look there, this folder is empty.

I used another tool named Total Commander to inspect this folder just to make sure that the Explorer

is not playing tricks on me. But again the folder is empty.

What do you see when you use Help | About Pegasus Mail | Info for the mail directories.  If this shows  C:\Program Files\PegasusMail\MAIL\ADMIN then that is the directory that PMail is using for the mail directory.  PMail can see files in this directory, if you cannot then there is something blocking your access.  With Vista anything is possible especially since it does not like data in the C:\program Files directory.

Hello Thomas,

when I choose Info and look at the mail directories I can see C:\Program Files\PegasusMail\MAIL\ADMIN.

I agree with You that it must must be something dealing with Vista. To solve my Problem I created a new mailbox making sure that

the directory location is within C:\Data\mail. Inside this new mailbox I created new folders each one coresponding to a file within  C:\Data\mail

Then I selected all my mails from these invisible folders and move them to the new folders. Now I have all those PMM-Files.

I will backup them and upgrade to a newer Pegasus version. Hopefully I can restore them later on.

Thanks for Your help
