Can't read old mailing list files - SOLVED

HAD COPIED LISTS TO WRONG FOLDER! Found the lists and moved them to pmail\mail\admin and then I could read them. I guess 25 years experience working with computers (started w/dos 1.1) really helps.

I copied files from Pmail on my old computer to my new computer via CD. Some files and folders can be read; others can't. I can open the mailing lists using notepad so I know they are there in the pmail folder. They are marked "read only". Thinking that might be the problem, I changed that property. Seems changing the property doesn't work - next time I review properties, the file is still marked "read only". Using Windows 7 64 bit. Any ideas?

WinPMail can not work with files with read only attribute at OS level. They must not be marked read only and may be automatically marked that way when using restore from a cdrom or backup program. The other read only marking is of course set with and created by WinPMail and that one is user controlled and does not interfere normally.

Where was your home mail box and new mail box located on the old system? Where is it located now on the Win7 system? I would like to see the output from  Help, About, and the Info button to see if anything looks odd there. Does your win7 system have proper rights or  permissions for the username running at the time to all c:\pmail and below in subdirs? Is your install in c:\pmail or is it installed to Program Files directory?

Yes, it shows what I wanted to see about install and locations. I don't anything that strikes me as unusual unless there could possibly be some problem with:

"** When installing on Windows Vista or later, If you have

UAC activated avoid installing Pegasus Mail v4.52 in %program files%

directory as the location of mail storage and configuration settings

interferes with the new MS UAC protection schemes."

as seen on the v4.52 System Requirements page.

I just got our first Win7 machine to experiment with and have not yet begun to install WinPMail or operate it personally just yet. I may have to borrow another one or buy another one<G> as daughter won't let me have it yet!

I have not seen anything so far or Win7 related to WinPMail that would explain symptoms such as you reported. It seems, to me, to be a simple matter of having copied your existing message folders or new mail messages from old machine to new machine and nothing to explain "now you see it, now you don't" type behavior. I would have expected all files were either marked read only or none were after reinstall or copy.

Jerry,

I've got a Win7 laptop system here and I have no problems at all using the default c:\pmail directory.  I can also use the C:\program files\pmail directory as well as long as I put the mailboxes in a directory outside of the c:\Program Files directory structure.  I've used c:\pmail\mail and Samba, Netware and Windows remote wireless volumes as well with no problems at all.

Actually it's significantly faster than WinXP running on the same system system over the lan. This might be the disk since I installed a new disk before installing Win7.  This is an old IBM T-60 laptop with 2 GBytes RAM.

So if *.pml files are set as "read only", I can't open them? Is that correct?

Correct, both the PMI (index) and PMM (data) folder files must be read/write.
So if *.pml files are set as "read only", I can't open them? Is that correct?
Pml files are not just distrubution list files but also or used for black and white list files.

All files in .\mail  and below subdirs should not be marked read only automatically. At one time or another during operations they all must be read and /or written to by the username. The only possible exceptions are .exe files down below .\mail\resource and those won't run in a 64 bit environment anyhow.

So all I have to do is figure out why I am unable to change the file properties on those specific files.
