Hi Chris-SA

What about reverting to the older version of Pegasus?  I appreciate it isn't the latest release etc but if it works then why not stick with it?  I presume you kept a copy of the files etc before upgrading...

Been using Pegasus since the early days of Win 95

Was using 4.41 since release for some time now -- never had any problems with it

Moved up to 4.51 and the problems started.

Using an AMD K6II 500Mhz and an nVidia graphics card --384 MB memory -- WIndows 98SE

Version 4.41 works great on this system. ( Never crashes)

With version 4.51 this is what happens

After a short while ( especially working with folders ) the icons ( glyphs ) on the toolbar fade out.

Then the icons in the folder windows start going transparent as well and the lines fade out -- font goes funny as well.

Everything slows down and it becomes impossible to work -- note the program does not "crash"  as such

Often you see an error message -- "Unable to create font"

In order to carry on working you have to exit the program and then start it again.

Windows 98SE itself is stable and I hardly ever have to reboot it.

Pegasus only lasts about and hour ( depending on how active you are with it ) before it "fades-out" again

I am using the latest iconv.dll from this site -- but I think that this is where the problem may lie.

I know -- I know -- I should upgrade my machine and go to XP or something -- thing is the old girl still has some life in her.

 This is driving me CRAZY.

I would like to use 4.51 as I find the new features it has very handy (autofilter on folders for one )

WHAT can I do ????

Is there an updated iconv.dll -- or perhaps some workaround ?

No, definitely not. Pegasus Mail is already working at the resource limit of Win 98 - which already severely restricts David Harris' capabilities for adding new features: We (testers) see such issues whenever he adds new resources (dialogs, buttons etc.) to Pegasus Mail. It's very likely that any major future update won't work on Win 98 anymore at all as it simply prevents David Harris from further development.

There may be a memory leak involved here, but this certainly isn't the main issue.

I appreciate that time moves on and things change ( Australia now has Internet censorship ) -- 384 MB of memory can still do a lot in the LINUX world.

Never mind a "simple"  email client.

Perhaps the time has come to give up the struggle ?

 As you move to Visual Studio 2008 -- perhaps I should also just move -- to Outlook 2008 ( or 2000 or 2003 with my "old"  machine.)

Be assured no one would prevent you from doing so. But it's exactly keeping up compatibility with outdated OSs which effectively would prevent David Harris from developing new useful features - especially given the fact that his own resources as a single developer are limited as well.

All the places I have looked speak about support for Win 98 -- so am I being really unreasonable ?

After all bad code is bad code whether it is DOS 3.3 or Win 7

IF something is wrong in 98 it is also possibly wrong in XP ?

Yes I have read about all the complaints about Win 7 not being shipped with an email client -- so I understand the rush to fill that gap.

I also understand ( a little ) about the complexities of coding and the HUGE investment in time and effort -- still Dave Cutler built Win NT
( but what has happened to Tru64 ? )

I think what I am saying is that I have no other option but to bug you to fix the bugs.

Pegasus is so good but it just needs that last mile still for the five stars.

I don't think I understand what you're trying to say here. What "places" are you talking of? If you refer to Pegasus Mail being Win 98 compatible I can tell you that 4.51 had been tested for working on Win 98 systems prior to release and nobody had any issues left with the release version anymore.

No: The resources issue is a Win 9x issue only, it won't occur on any system of the NT branch (which includes 2000/XP and later). And it isn't RAM-related, it's the limited number of handles available on these systems (IIRC 16384).

4.51 wasn't rushed (on the contrary), and 4.52 is simply a Windows 7 fix, hence it shouldn't matter to you.

David said he would be able to maintain the Win 9x branch for a while, but you may need to contact him directly as no one else reported this issue so far (AFAIK), so you may be the only one for testing this.
