I've setup a few public folder trees and created aliases so new mail gets delivered to the apropriate folders. That's working just fine. Using latest Merc/32 and Pegasus in a eDir environment.

Is there any way to get (tell tale) new mail notifications from the public folders in the same way as from a 'normal' new mail folder?

Not that I'm aware of. Your best bet might be to set up a filter such that when mail arrives to an alias that gets redirected to a public folder, an automatic mail is sent to you (or whoever). Not as good as a tell-tale, definitely, but workable.
