Using a proxy server

Some external mailservres will allow proxy on port 80 (http / web browsing) Fastmail & Gmail does look at their documents for instructions.

My current work will not allow any pop3/imap unless from preconfigured servers (internal only). This is not limited to Pegasus (Sylpheed, Mulberry & Alpine) all have the same problem. Proper firewalls for inside a corp network.

I am not a specialist in this field. I am instructed to use a specified (by the IPv4 address) proxy server to access internet.

I have entered it in my browser's settings, but couldn't find a similar setting in PMail.

Email access doesn't use (HTTP) proxies - only the HTML renderer might: Open a formatted (HTML) email message and press <Shift + F1> for reading instructions about why and how to configure BearHtml.

Thanks for the reply. I have turned to be even more ignorant than I thought...

The settings with which Pegasus Mail works well at my home and at my work, won't let it work at our client's office, where I want to use it for some time. The error it reports is:

«<pop3server> - Bad address».

Another e-mail client I have tried writes just "Cannot connect to the server".

Maybe you can help me resolve it?

Are you sure you're using the proper address? Can you ping (open a console (command line or DOS) window and enter ping pop3server.xyz) the server?

Nothing pings. But Internet Expolorer and Mozilla work OK (with Proxy servers for HTTP set up).

I assume you're using a webmail frontend for doing this? POP3/SMTP don't use the HTTP protocol, so this is a completely different issue. It might be a firewall/port issue, I'm afraid only your client's IT staff or provider can tell.

For what? I said I can browse the internet but can't use a POP3 e-mail client. Yes, I can use the web interface to my e-mail, although I don't want to.

Didn't we talk about email? Did you try different (email) providers resp. accounts (via Pegasus Mail, that is)?

I have tried accessing my work e-mail and my Gmail account, both with the same error — bad address. Both work fine with PMail at my work and home.

Is Pegasus Mail the only email client failing? I'd really take a look at firewall or other port blocking mechanisms on you're client's site ...

In all likelihood, the system at your client's office is properly firewalled and uses a proxy for web access. That would mean that the only access to the internet is through the proxy server, which is configured to allow ONLY web access. This is good for the company but awkward for you.

You'd have to speak to someone from their IT department to get a hole opened up for you. Good luck with that.

Yes, it looks like a problem outside PMail, now that I know of HTTP Proxies not being related to POP3/SMTP.
