You need to do something different depending whether you send plain or fancy emails:
Plain text - just type the whole link, including the 'http' part. e.g. http://www.pmail.com should become a clickable link in most email clients.
Fancy or rich text (html) - make the <a> tag by using the 'Insert a hyperlink' icon (which looks like a chain) above the editing area.
(If you send both rich text and plain versions, make sure you put the full link in as the text version of the hyperlink.)
