Where I work, 2 coworkers use and prefer Pegasus Mail.
Our company just went SSL and I was shocked to see Pegasus had problems with SSL. Specifically the users cannot receive (POP) eMails, SMTP works.
Then even more shocked when researching via your FAQ & Google that Stunnel was the solution! A 3rd party app!
A coworker uses Thunderbird on her work desktop & I us it on my Ubuntu Notebook PC. Thunderbird has no problems with SSL POP/SMTP, no 3rd party app required.
So if Thunderbird can do it (no Stunnel), why not Pegasus?
