Hello all,

Iam totally new to setting up a email server.

1) I have Mercury32 up and running on Windows XP.

2) I am able to send and recieve emails to the "outside" world on another PC that is in the same subnet.12.21......

Now....my problem....

I have another PC that is on another subnet 192.168......

And using Outlook Express 6 on this PC.

This PC can only receive emails, and not send. This is the error i get>>>>>"The connection to the server has failed. Account: '12.21.186.61', Server: '12.21.186.61', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10051, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"<<<<<<<.

What do i need to configure? Or do all client PCs need to be on same subnet.

Hope my lingo makes sence. :)

Subnet is irrelevant from an SMTP perspective, however you must be able to communicate with the server!

Do you have an appropriate route to the server?

Can you ping it?

To help, more information is required.

I have a dyndns name assigned to the Mercury mail server, and i am able to ping the Mercury mail server.

What other information is needed, as i have never setup a email server.

Does your ISP block port 25 inbound?  outbound?  This will cause major problem when trying to send via MercuryE or receive via MercuryS to/from the outside world.

Give us a copy of your Mercury.ini file and the domain name you are using.  This will allow us to do tests from the outside and provide info to allow you to correct your setup.

No port 25 is not blocked, but i do have another mail server that is already running, and using the standard default ports, its a linux setup. This mail server was setup by someone else, and they are no longer around to configure it.

Domain iam using for this server is --------   overcomerministry.dyndns.org

If you have a dynamic IP address you should be using MercuryC rather than MercuryE.  Dynamic IP addresses are blocked by most major mail servers via the DUL black list..

Thanks for helping.

I tried to change to the domain name thinking it might be the problem, must have been same time you checked it. :( I changed it back, but may take a few hours

before it will shew.

It is a static IP. Will this cause problems, when iam using a dyndns.org domain? This is only temporary until this email server is figured out :) and then it will

go to our .org domain.

What other ideas do you have for finding what the problem is?

Depending on your network setup the problem could be that you have set modules to answer on only the 12.21.186.61 interface. This field should in most cases be left blank. Additionally you should add all numerical IPs that the server might be responding on to the local domains section of core configuration - see Mercury help.

Causes no problem at all.  Running two servers using the domain name on the same  port and IP address though does cause major problems.

FWIW, I cannot connect to IP address 12.21.186.61 at all.  If this is the IP address of the Mercury/32 machine it's not answering on port 25.

> What other ideas do you have for finding what the problem is?

Port 25 on 12.21.186.61 is not allowed???

Mercury is not connected to port 25?

Thank you again :)

That ensures sumthin, it seems, at times, i can ping the PC that has Mercury32 on it and sometimes i cant.

When i get this PC or another one to ping all the time i will post back here again. And maybe get you to test it

again if you can?

Ok.....I have Mercury 32 on another PC . All pings well. And is configed for domain name overcomerministry.dyndns.org.On IP 12.21.186.62

1)I have emailed 3 different places 2 are web and 1 is not, all 3 put emails from my Mercury32 server

in the Spam.

2) I still must use a PC that is on the same subnet as the server to send emails.

Also here is Mercury.ini file........

What should i do next.

Please start by making the changes that Thomas and I have suggested in earlier posts (relaying, interface, local domains). As for the messages that where classified as spam, check if there are any hidden headers with additional information about the reason for the classification.

OK, i have progress :) I changed SMTP server to listen on port 25 and Alternate port 2025.

Had to allow non local to relay mail, Mercury 32 kept saying i was a non local user. ?!?! Do u know why?

I set my Outlook Express on PC that is on the 192.168. subnet, to use port 2025.

Emails to an outside mail server still throws mail into Spam, i cant find any hidden headers, it is a yahoo email, do u know where to find these headers in yahoo?

Sumthin else i noticed is all traffic local and outside incoming and outgoing, is all the action only shews on the the SMTP server module. Is this right?

Thanks again :)

OK, i have progress :) I changed SMTP server to listen on port 25 and

Alternate port 2025.

Then something internal is blocking port 25 since I can connect to your server on both port 25 and 2025.

Had to allow non local to relay mail,

Mercury 32 kept saying i was a non local user. ?!?! Do u know why?

Probably because the sender was not authenticating.  If the sender is trying to send mail to a non-local user then he must user ESMTP Authentication to be allowed to relay.  If you leave the server open (i.e. relaying turned on and strict turned off)  then your server is going to be on a black list within hours.

I

set my Outlook Express on PC that is on the 192.168. subnet, to use

port 2025.

Sounds like you are blocking port 25 internally with your windows firewall.

Emails to an outside mail server still throws mail

into Spam, i cant find any hidden headers, it is a yahoo email, do u

know where to find these headers in yahoo?

Not sure what you mean here.  You are sending mail to a yahoo address and it goes to spam?

1.  Are you send via Outlook?  Are you authenticating?  Give us a MercuryS session log.

2.  What happens when you do this via File | Send mail message in Mercury?

Sumthin else i

noticed is all traffic local and outside incoming and outgoing, is all

the action only shews on the the SMTP server module. Is this right?

No, the SMTP module only show received mail.  How are you sending the mail?  MercuryC/ MercuryE?

Some info on the servers:

MercuryS receives mail via SMTP, normally via port 25, it could use other ports if receiving mail from a forwarding system that can use alternate ports.  Normal mail delivery from the SMTP systems on the internet is always on port 25.

MercuryC sends mail via a relay host, normally on port 25 but it could use many other alternate ports as specified by the mail server.

MercuryE sends mail only on port 25.

MercuryD receives mail via POP3, normally on port 110 but it could use many other alternate ports as specified by the POP3 mail

server.

MercuryI receives IMAP4 connections normally via port 143 but you can configure it to receive on other ports.

In MercuryS configuration, Connection control you can specify IP ranges that always are allowed to relay through your server, typically your LAN range(s) (192.168...).

You should probably add IP numerals for internal and external IPs to Local domains in core configuration if you haven't done so already, both [12.21.186.62] and the [192.168...] number. I assume you already did remove the IP number from "IP interface to use" in MercuryS configuration. If all this is correct and no firewall software is interfering on the server machine you should be able to use port 25 normally, and there should be no need to use port 2025.

:) Ok, found out that the server the previous person setup was blocking port 25 for local use.(an axentra server) Now iam sending and recieving with default settings. port 25

I successfully added IPs to  the MercuryS config to allow relaying, and have set to  use strict relaying. And can send and recieve just great:)

In MercuryS configuration, Connection control you can specify IP

ranges that always are allowed to relay through your server, typically

your LAN range(s) (192.168...).

You should probably add IP

numerals for internal and external IPs to Local domains in core

configuration if you haven't done so already, both [12.21.186.62]

and the [192.168...] number. I assume you already did remove the IP

number from "IP interface to use" in MercuryS configuration. If all

this is correct and no firewall software is interfering on the server

machine you should be able to use port 25 normally, and there should be

no need to use port 2025.

Should i still add my IPs to the Local Domains in the Mercury core config? And if so, how should it be set for each. Example: what do i put in here>>>  Local host or server: ?????? Internet name:??????? .....what goes where?

Yes, you should do both. Local host is always overcomerministry, IPs within square brackets should be in the Internet name textboxes.

In the Outlook SMTP setup there is a setting to allow you to send the username and password to be used when authenticating. Select the properties of the account, select the "Servers" tab and go to the bottom and check "My server requires authentication" and then hit "Settings" and enter the username and password that you entered in the MercuryS | Connection control password file.

This looks more like a MercuryS log of your message being sent from OE to MercuryS rather than from MercuryE to a Yahoo host.

We need to see the MercuryE log to see if there is anything strange in the MercuryE to Yahoo server.  Ideally this would be a MercuryE session log so we get all of the details of the transfer.
