IMAP messages don't show in folder

Too bad with regard to debugging, but I'm glad you found a solution at least ...

One of my Pegasus installations is on an ancient laptop (Win XP Pro, PMail 4.52).  The laptop doesn't have much RAM and it's painfully slow, but it's always worked.  For several months now, this PMail will log in successfully to my IMAP account, update the message count in all folders, including the "New or unread mail (INBOX)", but when I double-click on the INBOX, the folder appears to be empty - no messages - even though the message count in the folder list shows hundreds.  (I use the traditional Pegasus list view, not the Outlook-type preview mode.)

Further clue.  I have a copy of PMail inside a TrueCrypt drive on a USB stick.  I've tried this on my various PCs.  I close the usual copy of Pegasus on the local hard disk and load the USB copy of Pegasus instead.  On my desktops it works fine, but on the laptop I get the same problem as described above.

Where should I look for a solution?  I'm sure this is really simple and I'm going to kick myself, so break it to me gently.  Thanks.

best

David

Quick checks:

  1. Check the available space within the TrueCrypt partition
  2. Check the drive mapping for USB mode (drive letter is different within Truecrypt since it is mounted)
  3. Check permissions to the subdirectory.

I run my Pegasus via Truecrypt when away from home.

Tons of space within TrueCrypt.

PMail is launched with this line in a .cmd file:

start \PMAIL_USB\winpm-32.exe -roam -A

so I don't think there's any problem with drive letters.  Not sure I understand about permissions question:  PMail inside TrueCrypt works absolutely fine on two desktop PCs.  On the problem laptop it no longer works - or rather, it works, but IMAP folders open as blank windows with no messages visible, even though the folder list looks quite normal.  But my question didn't concern the TrueCrypt installation, which I only mentioned in case it gave you a clue.  The real problem which is bugging me is an unencrypted, apparently normal installation of PMail on a laptop hard drive, with - as far as I know - exactly the same folder structure and settings as all my other Pegasus installations on the C: drives of other computers.  But this particular copy of PMail, the one on the laptop, has developed this weird nothing-visible-in-a-folder-window problem.  Where do I look for a fix?  In some Pegasus setting, or some Windows setting?

How about trying this for a test at least? And does this affect local folders as well? How about your IMAP cache settings?

Thanks, Michael.  OK, here's what I find on laptop copy of PMail:

(1) PMail loads, connects to IMAP server, says there are 1179 msgs in INBOX.

(2) Local folder behaves normally:  messages show in folder window and open.

(3) Preview mode had been disabled by the program because of an abnormal termination.

(4) When switched on from Folder menu, it appeared to work for one message in one IMAP folder - possibly already cached - but failed with another and crashed the program.

(5) After restarting PMail, ordinary list view appeared to work with one IMAP folder below the INBOX.

(6) Double-clicking INBOX folder gives usual IMAP "getting message information" notification, then displays empty folder saying "0 messages", then crashes.

(7) IMAP cache settings are identical to those on my desktop machines (which work fine).

I'm afraid I've now lost patience - all these crashes take forever to recover from on a slow laptop.  So I simply renamed my C:\PMAIL folder, then copied the entire C:\PMAIL folder and subfolders over from one of my desktops, then - just to be sure - reinstalled Pegasus 4.52 as an update.  And now all seems well:  it works.  I guess we'll never know what was wrong with the old installation.  Thanks very much for your interest.
