PM 4.52: Error in displaying adressees with brackets

Hello Thomas,

thanks for your explanation. I will try it later.

BTW: I'm using PMail since about 10 years I think. A short while ago I saw that the handling of brackets in alias here has changed in the mid of 2007. Before this time alias is shown in the full length regardless of round brackets.

Best regards
Wolfgang

Hello,

I'm running PM 4.52 (info image says 4.51(Win32), but it is the upgraded German version. Most likely the image was not "upgraded".)

Some people have several E-mail adresses. To distinguish between them I add to their names short information in brackets, e.g. "Willi Willson (gmx)".

When I use one of this entries in the "To" field and put a copy of this message in a mail folder (maybe not the right English PM name for this), only this bracket info is displayed in the "To" field. The other parts of the name vanish. This happens the same way, if the line contains more than one addressees, but one of them uses brackets.

E.g. mail to "Carl Carlson, Willi Willson (gmx)" is displayed in the folder like "To: gmx".

Best regards
Wolfgang

What I do for this type of addressing is place a ' - ' (space dash space) at the end of the person's name with a short description within the Address book Name (alias) field.

ie: Address Book Entry

Name (Alias) Arnold DeRoy - home

E-mail Address: username@firstmail.com

Name (Alias) Arnold DeRoy - work

E-mail Address: username@secondmail.com

For some people there will be three or four different entries in the address book.

There is some rules (RFC's) as to what is allowed in the To: field single quotes ' ', angle brackets < >, etc but I have found this to work.

Hope this helps.

What I do for this type of addressing is place a ' - ' (space dash space) at the end of the person's name with a short description within the Address book Name (alias) field.

ie: Address Book Entry

Name (Alias) Arnold DeRoy - home

E-mail Address: username@firstmail.com

Name (Alias) Arnold DeRoy - work

E-mail Address: username@secondmail.com

For some people there will be three or four different entries in the address book.

There is some rules (RFC's) as to what is allowed in the To: field single quotes ' ', angle brackets < >, etc but I have found this to work.

Hope this helps.

The () are reserved characters in an e-mail address, just like the <>. Set the Addressbook to paste addresses and enter the e-mail address as "Carl Carlson (Work)" <email.address> and you will not have there problems with reserved characters in an alias.

Hello Arnold,

thank you for your answer. I think your solution could work for me too.

Best regards

Hello Thomas,

thank you for your answer. So it seems that not PM makes the error but me.

I see that I was talking about the "alias". From this point of view I do not unterstand your suggestion, regarding "setting the Addressbook to paste". Do you mean that I shall paste the whole string ' "Carl Carlson (Work)" <email.address> ' to the alias? This sounds for me not very tempting because it must result in very long column entries.

But maybe I missunderstand you.

Best regards
Wolfgang

Use F3 and open an address book. Hit the "Book" menu, select "Addressbook properties" and then check "Apply the e-mail address instead of the alias". When this selected when you select a e-mail address from the book it will enter the e-mail address instead of the alias into the address field.

It's faster sending as well since there is no address to lookup at send time.

You change the e-mail address entry in the addressbook to add the personal name to the e-mail address so it is clear whose address you are using.
