Basic POP3 setup

I have removed the Interface.  I don't have a local domain as such as I am using this to pull down several POP3 accounts for myself and my wife.  After reading the section in Help it did not make any sense to configure those settings.

I am wanting to configure Mercury for Win32 to grab my email from several providers using POP3 and then download to one email client.

I have installed the MercuryP and MercuryD components only.  I have successfully configured MercuryD to get the external mail from multiple external POP3 accounts.  I have not been able to connect to MercuryP to get the mail into my email client (Outlook).  I have also attempted to Telnet to port 110 on the server and there is no connection.  Is there another component that I need to install ?

 Thanks
WDW

That all that is required.  If you have loaded the MercuryX protocol that would keep MercuryP  in the offline mode to verify that it is online.

I did not have MercuryX loaded.  I have loaded it but I don't see how it indicates how MercuryP is online or Offline ?  The MercuryP window shows "Current connections and status" as "Ready"

Thanks

Are Mercury and Outlook on the same network?  Can you ping the server?  (You may need to use the lan ip and not your external ip to access it.)

What is the message you get in telnet or does it timeout?  Turn on session logging in MercuryP to see what is happening - there may be a firewall in the server preventing access.

You do not want to have MercuryX loaded unless you really need it.  Unload it.   The "Ready" indicates it is not in the offline mode.

I have found that I can get a telnet connection if I use the localhost address of 127.0.0.1 .

I am beginning to think that I have missed a key configuration or something during the setup of the server.  My home network is using the 10.1.1.0 network.  Telnet would not respond to the IP number on that network.

I have setup two local users.  When Outlook tries to connect I am getting the username/password challenge box up indicating either one is wrong.  They are the correct name and password.

What is the minimum information I need to configure for the setup I am trying ?

Many thanks
Warren

Either you have put an incorrect value in the "IP interface to use:" box in MercP config (probably should be blank) or you have a firewall blocking connections to your 10.1.1.* interface.

It would seem to be a network problem rather than a Mercury problem.

Confirm by telling Outlook to connect to the server on 127.0.0.1

Hi

I am using the 127.0.0.1 address for the email client and this is getting me to the name/password challenge.  I have tried with my firewall off (uninstalled, Windows also off) and it made no difference. I had no entry in the  "IP interface to use:"  box but did add the IP number to see if it made a difference.

The main issue now is the name/password authentication is not working.  I am still wondering if it is a misconfiguration I made during the original setup process.  I did not setup any domains, local or external as an example, given the task that I wanted the server to complete.

Many thanks
Warren

Turn on 'session logging' temporarily for MercP to capture a log of the complete transaction.

Turn on 'session logging' temporarily for MercP to capture a log of the complete transaction.

I have turned on the log and there is nothing being captured.  I am creating the new POP3 account in Outlook and using the test button.  All the tasks complete except the last one to connect to the POP3 server to download the test message.  It prompts for the username/password, as if one or the other is wrong.

I have used the Manage Local Users option from the Configuration menu in Mercury32.  I have created a user called warren with a simple password.  I take it this is all that is required to create a user ?  A folder called warren exists in the Mail directory and has files (messages) in it.

Many thanks

I have turned on the log and there is nothing being captured.
That means you are not even connecting to the server. You have said your firewall is off, how about an AV acting as a POP proxy?
I am creating the new POP3 account in Outlook and using the test button.  All the tasks complete except the last one to connect to the POP3 server to download the test message.  It prompts for the username/password, as if one or the other is wrong.
I would expect a connection error rather than a password prompt, this also suggests an AV issue.
I turned my Trend Micro off.  I guess this is no absolute guarantee.  I may have to try with it completely uninstalled.

I have installed the latest Pegasus Mail client and have tried using it to grab the mail from Mercury.

I configured it to use POP3.  It had the following error:

[*] Connection established to 127.0.0.1
>> 0063 +OK POP3 server on Warren-PC ready <1292.717883664@Warren-PC>
<< 0013 USER warren
>> 0038 -ERR Unsupported authentication type

I have looked the athentication options but I don't see anything obvious.

In MercuryP configuration / SSL there is an option to disable plaintext logins for non-SSL connections. If this is checked you should uncheck it to be able to make unencrypted logins.

All check boxes in that tab were blank.  I have not changed it from the default install configuration.

OK. Has a password been set for this user? Mercury will by default not accept POP3 logins to accounts with no password.

Yes.  For testing I setup a basic two character password.

Going back to your mercury.ini file you should probably remove the Interface line under MercuryP if you haven't already done so. Mercury won't even answer on 127.0.0.1 with a specific interface specified - is there some other mail server software running?

Please fill in Internet name for this system and Local domains in core configuration as well (see Mercury help for more information about this).

Note that these changes require a restart of Mercury.
