Why do I have to regularly reindex some folders?

A "Compact folders once 0  bytes are deleted" setting means to never compact.  The default setting is 24000 which I would recommend setting back to.

For the last couple of years, I have had to regularly reindex some of my mail folders, and I don't know why?  Each time the reindexing is successful, and I delete the subsequent messages that reappear after this process.

The folders concerned here are all used during the mail filtering operation when new mail is read, so I am wondering if this may provide the clue??

 Version is 4.51.

Hello Ambassador,

Maybe it helps to upgrade to version 4.52; imho. it has nothing to do with filtering.
You are aware of the tool mbxmaint.exe?

Take a look in menu Tools/options/Advanced and see what the value is for automatic re-indexing (mine is 24,000 free space triggers compression and re-indexing. So it is deleted space being removed when the threshold is reached.

Pardon my breaking in on this thread.  I have never changed the value setting which was automatic when I set up Pegasus.  I am running v 4.41 on a Windows 2000 system.  I am running the automatic reset at a value of "0".  Should I change this value from 0 to 24,000?  We're into an area which I don't really understand, so I have left it at what was apparently the default value.  Would you recommend that I reset the value to 24,000?

This may help.  I find that when I delete files from a folder, especially a lot, and then move to another window, it often eventually causes the folder that I deleted files from to require an reindexing or get an error requiring it.

If I delete files and and then close that window before going to another window, this never occurs.  I believe the file deletion followed by the closing forces a reindexing.  Doing this diligently has prevented many reindexing problems or folder crashes and the subsequent time wastings.  It would be great to have the folder reindex automatically when moving to another window.  But until that occurs, I sahll continue to do what I currently do.
