Virus trouble, I think . . .?
I checked for CNM files, but nothing there which seemed relevant.

When I right clicked (both were in New Mail), neither was marked read-only, BUT both were marked as being white-listed!  How can someone someplace else send an already white-listed mail to me?  How does one make a mail that can't be deleted?
Impossible unless the files are locked or the messages marked read-only. I guess that these settings had something to with what AVG did to them, you may search this forum for other reports applying to AVG issues. You may have actually encountered another one of these zero byte file crashes which can be solved permanently, see this thread and especially Thomas' post.

Hi all:

Having a great deal of trouble today.

Two e-mails arrived, one after the other, in the regular e-mail box rather that the spam box, both with strange 'From' designations, and I just tried to delete them, but they wouldn't delete.

My entire PMail froze and wouldn't do anything and the row of task icons at the top all whited out.  I checked my CNN files to see if there was anything really big that would cause the freeze, but nothing. I rebooted as Peg wouldn't even close, but wouldn't open either.  I think at that point it would just sit in the lower right-hand taskbar and do nothing.

Oh, and when I did manage to open mail that came in subsequently, there would be nothing in any of them except a notice that "This message contains binary or non-textual data that cannot be previewed within Pegasus Mail.

   Filename:   Unknown

You can work with this file in the message reader's 'Attachments' page."

After reboot I ran AVG, and it said two of my CNN files were infected, but didn't say with what.  I tried to remove them, and one seemed to go, but the other gave a message in AVG that it was "inaccessible".

I've gone to my files and deleted all CNN files that were listed as coming in today, and still not perfect joy. I still can't delete those e-mails, though I did manage to read some email that just arrived.  And I did manage to delete the emails with that strange message too.

What should I do next, and is there an answer to these e-mails that can't be deleted?  This is the second time I've had these but at least the first bunch didn't freeze the program.

TIA,

~marilyn

I don't know AVG and hence I don't know what inaccessible (if this is the exact wording, otherwise please quote) means when issued by AVG, but if the file would be locked by an application I would suggest to restart or reboot your system and then try deleting the file without launching Pegasus Mail before as it should be the only application possibly locking the file (aside from AVG itself, of course).

I think I don't quite understand: Do they still freeze Pegasus Mail? And if so how would you be able to open other emails? And what does delete emails mean in this context? Delete from within Pegasus Mail or delete the CNM-files?

Danke, Michael.

AVG is the anti-virus program I run. Inaccessible meant that the anti-virus program couldn't get at the file to handle it, I suspect.

Peg does seem to be working now with the exception of the fact that I can't get rid of those e-mails that had the virus in them.  And yes, I do want to delete the emails from within Pegasus.

>>I would suggest to restart or reboot your system and then try deleting

Now that you know more (the file has since disappeared from the AVG virus list and doesn't show up on subsequent scans) I'm not sure the above applies, and if it still does, where do I delete the file and which file?

Hm, this doesn't make any sense because you obviously can't. Two more questions: If you right-click these emails in their respective folder(s) and open the Message properties, are they marked read-only by any chance? If this doesn't solve the issue (the solution should be obvious), where are these messages located? In the new mail folder (in this case they would be stored as CNM-files) or in another folder (which would make things more difficult)?

Thanks again Michael:

I checked for CNM files, but nothing there which seemed relevant.

When I right clicked (both were in New Mail), neither was marked read-only, BUT both were marked as being white-listed!  How can someone someplace else send an already white-listed mail to me?  How does one make a mail that can't be deleted?

I took the white-listing off, and basically everything else in the properties, none of which applied as it was things like 'has been replied to'.  Then I went back and listed them with Spamhalter - which froze Peg again.  I rebooted then and  - Hallelujah! - they are gone!!  And not in spam folder or deleted mail either.

Thank you so much for your help and suggestions.  Being just a non-tech person, I really don't have much of an idea where to start with these things, so my first response is panic.  <(^o^)>
