Outlook 2007 IMAP create folders

An entirely new mailstore is indeed in work for Mercury, but it's still some time until it's finished (it requires rewriting a very big portion of the code).

Would it be possible to use Thunderbird to first create the wanted folder structure and then transfer messages folder by folder, or is the structure too complex for that?

Hi all,

as I am a newbee, sorry for  asking stupid questions.

I just set up Mercury/32 on one machine and I have a running MS Outlook 2007 on another machine.

Setting  up the IMAP connection was no problem, I can connect, receive & view mail and I can also create a  new folder in the root folder.

But I cannot create a new folder within a folder. I have read about folders cannot contain both folders and messages. But all I am trying to do is first create a folder (lets say "mailbox") at root and then create empty subfolders in there.

Next step would be to copy the whole content from the existing outlook  (containing a larger hierachy) to the IMAP account

Thanks in advance for your help.

Tested this successfully on Mercury 4.72 with Eudora:

- Created a new top-level folder called Tray1.

- Created a mailbox within Tray1

- Created a folder called Tray2 within Tray1

- Created a mailbox within Tray2

- Moved a message from another mailbox to the new mailbox in Tray2

I don't have access to MS Outlook 2007 so I'm not sure if it behaves differently.

In Outlook there is no difference between folder and mailbox. In fact, there are only folders. Or I didn't see the right thing.

So, i tried to a a new folder called "Tray1" - no problem

Create a new folder called "Tray2" within Tray1 - Outlook refuses, saying "Tray1 is not allowed to contain subfolders. This is probably a restriction of the IMAP server. To create a folder, that can contain subfolders, add '/' to the name when creatinh the folder" (translated from German error message)

And did that work? (First creating a top-level folder named TraySlash1/, and then a sub-folder within TraySlash1/ called Tray2.)

No :-(

In the meanwhile, I  installed Thunderbirf. There one can specify, if a new folder shall contain folders or messages. In case of creating a folder for folder, it works. This setting is missing in Outlook, or I cannot find it.

It is still the question, how to transfer all my old messages together with the hierachy to Mercury, as a simple copy / move does not work in Thunderbird either. The folders will be created as "folders containing messages" and the same trouble starts again.

I think, I should postpone this until Mercury is able to handle both folders and messages at the same time.

PMail and Mercury foldering does not support both folders and messages in folders.

From the PMail help:

This server supports folders within folders:  Some IMAP servers will allow you to create mail folders inside other mail folders along with the messages they contain, while some will not. Servers that do not allow folders within folders will create trays that can contain folders, just like Pegasus Mail's standard folder view. Checking this control helps Pegasus Mail to work out how it should go about creating folders for you on the server. At the time of writing, the following common IMAP servers do support folders within folders (i.e, this control should be ticked if you are using one of these servers): Netscape IMAP Server, Microsoft Exchange IMAP Server, Novell GroupWise IMAP Server, Cyrus IMAP Server. Most unix-based IMAP servers, especially the University of Washington UW-IMAPD reference server do not support folders within folders, and hence this control should be left unticked if you are accessing one of these servers. Mercury/32, Pegasus Mail's companion product, shares the same message store as Pegasus Mail and hence does not support folders within folders, so you should leave this control unchecked if you are connecting to it.

From the MercuryI help:

 Client configuration

At present, MercuryI presents the Pegasus Mail message store, which does not support the idea of folders that can contain both messages and other folders: folders can contain either messages, or other folders, but not both. You may need to configure your IMAP4 client to take account of this fact - for instance, in Pegasus Mail, when you create an IMAP profile for a MercuryI server, you would make sure that the "This server supports folders within folders" control is not checked. Future versions of MercuryI and Pegasus Mail will almost certainly allow folders to contain both messages and other folders.
