If you follow the instructions in the installer carefully it should give you a working basic installation that you can then tweak according to your needs and circumstances. Note that the MercuryX module in 4.72 is broken, so you shouldn't enable it unless you actually need it (and if you do there is a patch in the downloads section here at the forum).
The help texts in Mercury give a lot of information about the configuration alternatives, so that's a good starting point for further tinkering. Don't try to fill in every empty field in the configuration dialogs without first reading the help text for it, some should probably be left blank.
There is a PDF manual in the installation directory as well if you should feel like diving deeper into it.
