"Stopped working" message in 64-bit Vista

Hi Thomas,

Bizarre: when I started putting the .cnm files back, Pegasus ran again.

The problem turned out to be a 0 length .cnm file.

Many thanks for the excellent advice.

Cheers, Paul

Hi all,

I'm unable to open Pegasus (4.51) today on my main PC (running 64-bit Vista Home Premium): Windows is giving me the "Pegasus Mail stopped working" message every time.

More details:

When closing down last night, I wrote a last e-mail (replying to a message). I got a failure message from the send, so I tried to re-open Pegasus to send it again. I got the "mailbox locked" message and clicked on continue. I got the usual finding folders message and the setting up desktop message. Then Windows popped up with its "stopped working" message and that was that.

This morning, the "stopped working" message is what I get every time.

I have tried the following.

I have Pegasus (4.51) on my laptop (running 32-bit Vista). I copied the MAIL folder to this machine and opened Pegasus. No problem, everything appeared to be there and I was able to send the outstanding message. I copied the files that had been amended back to the MAIL folder on the 64-bit computer. When I tried to open Pegasus, I got the "stopped working" message from Windows again.

I downloaded and ran the updater for version 4.52. Now Pegasus gives me the "you have updated message" and then I get the "stopped working" message from Windows comes up before I can click on the Pegasus message.

I have tried removing .cnm files (as suggested in other posts on this forum) - it makes no difference

Any suggestions?

I can, of course, work from my laptop for the time being, but I really need to get it Pegasus working on my main computer again.

Move all of the *.CNM files out of the new mail directory and try again.  It should now open normally.  You can then put the messages back one at a time until you find the problem message.

It's probaby going to be a really large message.  If you are using content control then I'd recommend that you set a limit on the message size so you are not scanning these large files with encoded attachments.

1.    Use  Tools | Spam and content controls | Content control...

2.    Select and edit the control definition

3.    Select the "Message tests" tab.

4.    Enter 8000 in "Check at most this many bytes in each message"

FWIW, Vista's "Stopped working" really means the program is working too hard processing that it did not have time to answer.

While you are at it make sure you get the Spamhalter "Zero byte CNM file update" A zero byte file is causing Spamhalter to crash and the OS also takes down Pegasus Mail.  .
