I have been noticing the above message "To: postmaster (local) "Deferred" appearing on line after line in Mercury.

Does anyone know what that means? Mail is apparently being collected and delivered as per usual, but something must be waiting for something... if it is being 'deferred'.

The "deferred" generally means that Mercury could not write a CNM file to the user account assigned as postmaster.

What messages could be being sent to 'postmaster'? And what should I do to insure that these messages are delivered (and can be read)?

As a quick and dirty fix I tried to create a Postmaster folder where my other folders are. But nothing seems to have changed. It's still being deferred.

Go to the Mercury queue  and look at the QCF/QDF file pairs with an ASCII editor like Notepad to find out what the messages are saying.  The QCF control file shows the address in the BA: line.  The QDF data file is the RFC 2822 message and can be saved with a CNM file extension to the postmaster user new mail directory for reading if you wish.

Checkout Configuration | Mercury core | General to find the local username of the postmaster.  Verify that this user exists and that Mercury has all rights to this directory.

Shall I change the Postmaster to my own user name? Would that work? That way would I get these messages?

Done as I suggested and I see it now works.

Shall I just delete all these files in the queue that have the extensions QCF, QIF and the BAD folders created when Mercury was advising me of this? 

I am not sure why this was not set up properly in the first place, but it seems to be working. Gradually all these messages are being delivered to me, so I guess all is in order. The mails in the folders created just seem to be more of the same, I think.

Now I will at least get error messages.

The error message recommends putting back the QCF and QDF files back into the queue from the folders, one pair at a time.
The trouble is that one folder has only QDF files from ages ago (12th), the others are all today, error messages the same, presumably.

So what would I do with the messages that have no QCF pair?

In this case Mercury would be putting the file pairs into a subdirectory of the queue  called Save_QxF.  You would move these back one at a time for processing after Mercury has recovered.

The postmaster should be someone that check this mail on a regular basis.  You can also use "Add mailbox to list" to add this users mail directory to your own account and make sure you check it at least daily.

Open the QDF file with Notepad and check it out.  Quite possibly these were previously delivered and for some reason the QDF file could not be deleted.  File open in anti-virus software is the most common cause.
