Moving from XP to W7 64 bit, advice please

Thanks.

Yes I did have a full back-up and I found the toolbar.pm there.

Terry.

Hi Guys,

It's a while since I asked anything here as Pmail has been running very well on my XP PC and a Vista laptop. [:)]

I'm soon to get a new PC with Windows 7 64 bit and would like any tips on installing PMail on that system; is it straightforward?

I would like a reminder of how to copy my mail & addresses from  the XP machine to the new one please - is it just a case of copying the appropriate folder(s) across? What about making sure PMail is the default mail program?

Thanks,

Terry

Thanks for your reply. I did some searching before I posted and some more afterwards too but I could not find anything specific.

Since then I've done a dummy run using a Vista laptop (similar to W7 as I understand it) and had success it seems.

PMail was already installed on the laptop which I use now and again but leave messages on the server.

To check out transferring to another machine and Windows operating system, I re-named the existing ADMIN folder in the Vista Program Files directory and then copied the ADMIN folder from the XP machine.

When I opened PMail in Vista, everything seemed to be there, folder structure, e-mails, filters etc.

Looks like it's a very simple job to do [:D]

I guess there are other users who know this already but have not been able to reply; hopefully my post here may help some others.

I'll report back when I've done the real thing in a couple of weeks.

Windows Vista/7 issues.

Migration issues.

64-bit issues.

Michael,

Thanks for the links - I'm worried now [*-)]

Maybe it worked on Vista (it is 32 bit) because I have UAC turned off.

I'll have a play around with it on and see what happens.

You may do it either way, but please consider these points:

  1. Turning off UAC will affect (specifically: break) all applications not designed for Windows 7.
  2. If turning it off do so before installing any such applications, this should avoid such compatibilty issues.
  3. You should not change this anytime later unless you want to be forced into relocating configuration files manually.

Thanks again for the comments. I'll have to see how I get on when I get the new PC; the old one will be kept running in parallel for a period as back-up.

PMail in Vista 3 worked fine with UAC on or off except with it on there was always the warning prompt by UAC to open it it despite it being set to run as administrator.

I understand W7 UAC is less obtrusive.

Do you know if PMail will be upgraded to make it fully compatible with all versions of Windows 7? David Harris seems to have been very quiet for many weeks.

Yes, it is.

No, I don't, it's a delicate issue, we've had arguments in the past, you may find some in the beta discussions forum ...

Report Back:

I took delivery of my new Win7-64 PC this week and I've had no serious problems with installing PMail onto it.

I installed the program to the default C:\PMail directory and copied the Mail Folder from my XP machine to replace the newly installed Mail folder.

UAC was on at the default level but I've since reduced that level so that another program opens without a prompt.

And a question:

The only minor issues are that there is no sound heard for new mail, no pop-up message or flapping wings on the icon.

I have probably forgotten where those features are set so if someone could remind me I would be grateful.

Is it possible to edit the sound that is heard?

Thanks,

Terry

Tools,options,reporting/logging should do it. Search and point to and set the sound file and test it.

Thanks Jerry, that sorted it. It's so long since I set up PMail, I've forgotten some of the detail.

Another item I can't sort out is having  buttons for Queue and Draft Manager. Any help on this would be appreciated.

Read the bpanel.txt file in the resource subdirectory. First select the type of button part you like to use down under Options.

I just use keyboard shortcuts instead of buttons. Try alt-f-i to view the Qued mail. Try ctrl+o to view draft messages.

I have seen customized toolbar.pm files but I can't remembered who was offering to share their version.

See this post. If you have a backup of a mailbox directory from previous installations you may already have a customized toolbar.pm in there.
