Generating Errors

I misread your last posting, thinking that the error reports had been received.  Apparently that is not the case.

I have just filed another error report, and sent separately  a compilation of four error reports.

Today I was able to bring up the "Junk Mail" folder and sort through it for about two minutes before I encountered an error.  You should have today's error report.

Once again, I appreciate all your help.

I'm using Pegasus 4.41 on an older system running Windows 2000Pro.  I started with Pegasus 1.0 years ago, and have been a staunch supporter.  I have no interest in upgrading to a newer version of Pegasus at this time because of the multiple user aspect.

Last night I downloaded 7 emails, small ones judging by the speed at which they downloaded.  All went to the "Junk or suspicious mail" folder.  When I tried to open the junk mail folder, to review my junk mail, I received an error message:  "Winpm-32.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows.  You will need to restart the program.  An error log is being created."

I tried opening the junk mail folder several times, with the same result each time.  I gave it a rest overnight, but the same thing is happening this morning.  I need some help on this.  Not all emails going to junk mail are actually junk mail.  I need to be able to review that folder.

All help would be appreciated.

The first thing to do is use Tools | Spam and content controls | Spamhalter and turn off the use of Spamhalter so that no more mail is sent to this folder.  You could create a different folder and point to that but until you fix the problem I'd recommend that you manually handle your spam.

Are you running any sort of anti-virus software that check the folder files in the Pegasus Mail directory structure?  If so turn it off and then right click on the folder and select "Check consistency".   If this comes back good try opening the folder again.  If it come back with an error about a corrupted index, re-index the folder.

If the program crashes with either of these processes then it looks like the actual PMM file is hosed.

Aside from trying Thomas' suggestions I'd like to learn more about this crash for providing David Harris with details which may enable him to prevent future crashes because of similar issues, so could you please create a crash dump using my MiniDump extension? You may need to run it in "stand-alone" mode, for details please see its ReadMe file after installation.

 Thanks for the quick replies.

Thomas, I'll answer you first.   Spamhalter is not turned on, according to Pegasus.  The checkbox 'Enable Spamhalter' is not checked.  I would translate that to mean that Spamhalter is not active.  However, it has been active at some point in the past.  When I dig just a bit deeper to cleanup the Spamhalter database, I find 13,8xx entries, of which 8,4xx would be cleared.  So, I must have had Spamhalter active at some point.

When I checked the consistency of the "Junk and Suspicious Mail" I found no problems.   I immediately tried to open the folder, and was met with the same error message.  Everything seems fine and in good order, except that there is a problem.

Michael,  I'm more than happy to set up the minidump.  If it will help you and David Harris fine-tune Pegasus, then it is a job well worth the effort.  The critical factor is time.  I cannot really do too much more until tomorrow.  I do not expect the situation to change very much between then and now, so the delay shouldn't effect things too much.

BTW, all other areas of Pegasus seem to be working well.  I sent myself a test email, and it came through as it should.

1.    What happened when you tried the re-index?

2.    You also might want to do a right click and use "Folder information" to get the file name and then go to your mailbox directory and make sure the files are not marked read-only.

The MiniDump add-on extension program has been installed.  It reacted as expected to the crash, and I can only assume sent a crash report, probably three.  Please let me know if the report did not generate and send.

Thomas, I did not re-index because your instructions were to do so only under certain conditions.

One of you asked about antivirus and protection programs.  I and running Avast Anti-virus, Malwarebytes Anti-malware, and Superantispyware.  They have not shown any threats.

Since I am totally lost on this I will await further instructions.  Many thanks for your help.

Hm, the beta-reports account doesn't show any, did you actually trigger a send after restarting Pegasus Mail and being prompted for checking the auto-saved message drafts? It doesn't send them without you doing it proactively, you have to open the auto-saved reports and send them yourself.

That's not the point here, these applications might actually interfere heavily with Pegasus Mail's file processing, some people get corrupted folders or messages or unexpected connection issues this way.

I misunderstood the instructions, and thought it was more automatic than what it actually is.  I think I got it right this time.   Please let me know if I provided what you need, and whether there is anything significant.

The protection programs I use have never interfered with Pegasus, to the best of my knowledge.  I'd really like to keep them in place.  It's a dangerous world out there, and we all need what protection we can get.

I'm into uncharted waters here, so you may have to lead me by the hand.

Unfortunately not: There was a message, but the attachment containing the dump file was missing. If - for whatever reason - these files don't get attached automatically on your system please check your TEMP directory (see Help => About Pegasus Mail => Info for its location) for files with names like 2010-12-05#00-22-46.cab or 2010-12-05#00-22-46-128.dmp (the former is simply a compressed version of the latter).
