Pegasus checking IMAP new mail
Paul - With regard to POP3 and rule-sets, I noted the following in the Pegasus Help:

POP3 filtering sets are slightly different from other filtering rule sets in Pegasus Mail - they have a more limited range of actions available (because many of the standard filtering actions are only meaningful if the message is actually present on your system), and have the three additional special actions described above.

I didn't go any further with the POP3 option ... maybe I should have done.
That is specific POP filtering with minimal download of messages for people who are on a slow or restricted connection.  The normal rulesets can still be applied to all messages whether they are fetched by POP3/IMAP or whatever.
No, for me, new messages never (at least not within 30 mins) appear unless I take some manual action.  I couldn't find any Pegasus setting that might affect this.  I wonder whether this could be some Windows 7 issue, though I am pretty sure that many people will be using Pegasus with Win7.  I'll maybe install Pegasus on another machine, running XP, and see if it makes any difference.

My preference would have been to filter on the Mercury side, but there doesn't seem to be any way of filtering into specified folders within an account, only to the Inbox of another account.
That's correct, there is currently no Mercury filtering to specific folders - only to different mailboxes.  There has been talk of extending it but no timescale yet.

I tagged something on at the end of my previous post about filtering, which had little to do with the subject.  This was that Pegaus didn't seem to be checking for new mail on IMAP accounts.  However, it turns out that it is (audio alert), but the display isn't being updated until I click on the Inbox folder (even though Inbox is open).  Is this the expected behaviour?

Thank you

Gordon

That's a pity.  I was hoping that mail a listing of a new mail message would appear in the open IMAP INBOX automatically (as it does with POP3 mail), without having to check for new mail by clicking on the folder.

What I am trying to do would also require that general filtering is applied to new arriving messages while the IMAP INBOX is open (rather than on-open or on-close), but that doesn't seem to be possible either.

Thank you

Gordon

How about using server-side (POP3-) filtering? You're not required to download messages after applying POP3-filtering and you can define a time interval. I'm not sure whether it would work, though, it's just a guess ...

They do appear, but the filter isn't applied until you open/close/refocus the folder (depending on filter type and list/preview mode).  The difference between this and POP3 is that you are not dealing with the natural New Mail folder but a (usually) remote mailbox.

Thanks Paul and Michael.  What I am now trying (for automatically filing messages) is to send a copy from the server side (Mercury) to a second IMAP account, GordonFiler.  I have created a series of sender-related folders within the GordonFiler account and made these Autofilter folders.  I am then hoping that these folders, once trained with the first message, will collect any further messages sent to the GordonFiler account from the same sender.  This way, the filing/archiving process should be totally independent of the normal mail reading process, using the Gordon account.  In fact, if I wish, I can use a totally different client for reading (I have to say that I quite like the clean and simple interface provided by Windows Live Mail (sorry!), which has the advantage of showing messages as soon as they arrive.).

I did think about using POP3, but on the client side.  However, this wasn't going to work because of the much more restricted set of available filter rules.

Thank you

Gordon

Paul - I missed something in your previous post.  You said "They do appear ....".  If, by this, you mean that new IMAP messages appear without any manual intervention, this is not what is happening for me with Pegasus.  They will appear immediately if I reduce from full-screen to a floating window (Restore Down), but messages won't appear automatically by themselves.  This all happens after I have removed all filtering.

You've lost me there - how is the filtering ruleset more restrictive if you are using POP3?

Well, they do appear for me - not immediately, but after a while.  And both in list and preview mode.  It must depend on some internal display refresh, but I don't know why you don't see it.

Incidently, since you are using Mercury as your server, why don't you create Mercury filter rules to do the main separation into the other mailbox?

Further to my last post, when new mail arrives, there is a sound alert.  However, I have sound alerts turned off for new mail arrival.  The actual sound is the same one as that when one tries to do something which is not allowed by Pegasus, e.g. the same as that when one clicks on folder deletion and a folder hasn't been selected.  BTW, the INBOX mail count is up-dated when new mail arrives, even though the mail doesn't show in the message list.

I wondered whether the Avast (my anti-virus) Mail Shield was running on this system .... I have run into trouble with this before.  It was running, but turning it off made no difference.

I also have Windows Live Mail (Windows Live Essentials) on the system.  I am wondering whether this might be interfering with Pegasus, even when WLM hasn't been opened (e.g. it has background processes that always run).
