Any Way to Permanently Delete a Message After It's Read?
You're right, I just have to break my habit of working in preview mode if I want this to work as designed.
Just to clarify this - you can get 'on-close' filters to work in preview mode but you have to fully open the folder in it's own window ( by double-clicking or pressing return).  The filters are applied when you close this window and return to the 3-pane view.

Using 4.52

I seem to remember that there was a way to do this.....maybe ALT-Delete or something?

What I'd really like to do is delete messages the "normal" way and then set up an autofilter rule to permanently delete designated emails once they get to my deleted folder. Can this be done?

 thnx!!!!!

First check to see Tools, Options, Basic.. and make sue the item to confirm deletes is unchecked. Then use Ctrl+delete button or Ctrl + Del key.

There is no rule to do the ctrl+ function, only the function which will send to deleted messages folder instead of bypassing it.

Is there a way to filter emails from a specific source to a different "delete" folder? Then maybe I could periodically just delete that entire folder.....

Thanks

You can set up any Folder open or Folder close rule you like for the Deleted Messages folder. I have one set up that deletes all messages older than 1 day on folder close.

Cheers!

Sorry, I should have added that I was only referring to "on close" rules in preview mode, "on open" rules do work.

OK...somehow I created a filter rule for a specific folder and it actually seemed to work correctly.

Now, I can't seem to make a second rule.

When I try Tools>Mail filtering rules>Create/edit general rule set, I can create a new rule, but can't figure out how to tell it to actually perform some operation.

Can someone give me the exact steps?

Definitely confused!!!!!

I'm not sure what it is that you are unable to achieve, but here's a suggestion. Right-click the folder to which you wish to apply the filter rule set, click either Attach folder-open filter set or Attach folder-close filter set and then select the filter rule set of your choice. Hope this helps.

I can do this and it takes me to a screen that says "select a filtering rule set."

I can create or delete a "rule set," but I can't figure out how to have the "rule set" delete emails with specific headers from my deleted mail folder.

I'm probably confused, but I think (???) I want to actually edit a "rule set."

I'm afraid I'm beginning to get just as confused. Could you give an example (with a fictitious email address) of what you're unable to figure out? Or can you give a step-by-step description of what you do and where it goes wrong? I think we need a little more information to go by.

Cheers!

Sure.......maybe what I'm trying to do can't actually be done.

I'm guessing about 80% of what accumulates in my Deleted Message folder comes from 4 sources, so I'd like to set up 4 "rule sets" to delete emails from my deleted mail folder with the specific headers from these 4 sources when this folder opens and/or closes.

When I highlight the Deleted Messages folder and then go to Tools>Mail filtering rules>Create/edit general rule set, I can create a new rule, but can't figure out how to tell it how to actually perform some operation. (IE: If the header says "Welcome to XYZ", please delete this message.

How do I create a general rule set that will actually delete messages from my Deleted Messages folder?????

You don't need 4 different rule sets for that, only 1 rule set with 4 rules. I would set up each rule to delete a message if the From: headers says xxx@yyyy.com.

OK...I think I've figured it out.

Here's my problem....the help manual says: "To have a rule set applied automatically, right-click the folder in the Folder Manager window  and select either Attach folder-open filter set or Attach folder-close filter set."

I don't seem to be able to get the rule set to work when I either open or close the folder or open or close Pegasus.

It does work if I specifically tell it to apply the rule set to the folder.

Am I doing something wrong?

When using a close filter attached to a folderyou must actually close the folder.  When previewing folders moving to the next folder is not a close, neither is closing the folder view.   Open the folder and close it an then the close filter is triggered.  This is done for obvious reasons, you really do not want the close filter to trigger when just moving through the folder listing.

Opening and closing the actual folder or even closing Pegasus doesn't work.

Do I have to "apply general rule set to folder" every time I re-open Pegasus. (I guess I assumed it would remember between sessions.)

You need to attach the general rule set to the folder as either an open or close filter.  It can be attached as both if you wish.  That said if you are working on the deleted messages folder and you are saving deleted messages then this deletion will simply put the deleted message into the deleted messages folder.

The only way to do a permanent delete from the deleted messages folder is to use the CTRL+Delete (CTRL+Confirm) the message.

From my experimenting, I've found that I can apply a general rule set to my deleted messages folder and permanently delete the messages I've targeted in the rule set.

I still have the feeling that either you haven't really attached a rule set or you're working in preview mode. Have a look at the picture below and note the tick.
