Mail Message Body Disappeared

I just noticed something very unusual with your last new mail count figure. On first glance I thought it was 608 which would be extremely large amount but on reread I see it is 1608 mew messages. That by itself is sure to cause some problems. The max new mail count has been raised a couple of times but used to be 250 then 500 and possibly 750 now. Beyond that winpm-32 slows down drastically and new mail folder is only refreshed when done manually. New mail is not a regular folder, which may have many, maybe many thousands of messages. New mail is just visualization of the *.cnm files that have not yet been filtered or moved into message folders.

Can you rename the new mail files to something like *.cnm.bak with winpj-32 closed and the  reopen to test. I think then things will work for you. If so then move/rename the files back again in small groups of maybe a  couple of hundred and retest. Move them off to permanent storage or use filtering rules on them to store them. Then try another batch until all/ most have been moved out of new mail folder.

If that test fixes things then create some new mail, on open, filter rues to distribute the mail to folders or use a general rule set to move them manually into folders.  With most users the new mail only  contains a few messages and typically only those received in last session since starting Pegasus Mail, usually a few hours or less. It is unusual for a user to leave their machine on and Pegasus Mail running overnight.  The exception might be somebody using IMAP and always receiving mail and leaving it on the server for storage. I'm assuming you download mail from server via POP3. Most ISP's frown on leaving mail on server for long or much volume left for storage.

I just transitioned from an XP Pro machine to a Win7 Pro machine, and was using Pegasus v4.21 with no problem for approx. 2 weeks, until one morning I started Pegasus, and found when I opened mail messages, there was no message body. The header info was there, but nothing else. This was the same with both new and old mail messages. The mail messages print just fine, so its somewhere in the viewing. I have since tried upgrading to v4.52, but this did not resolve the problem. I'd greatly appreciate any assistance in fixing this issue. Thanks in advance.

In order to try to help we will need some information and the first and easiest to obtain is to do Help menu, About.. and the Info button within winpm-32 and select and copy and paste here. That will show version and basic connfiguration and setup. That will show some basic machine info.

Second, what is the default printer driver used on the new machine and is it always available to this machine. The default printer driver has to do with display and editor/reader ability to display message content.

It would be helpful to see same information from the former XP machine and install also. How was data actually transferred to the new machine? What media used? Winpm-32 can not function with files marked read only and cdrom, some drives, and some backup programs mark files as read only attribute which must then be removed at the OS level to function.

I'm assuming your current install on the win7 machine was to default c:\pmail location and you did not attempt to install to program files location. Was it a complete install or  update?  Did you install or did you just copy and paste to new drive? Is the printer local to the machine or is it a network printer? Was the former install also to default c:\pmail drive location?

In preview mode or a reader window? Does the raw view (in a reader window) show all message data? Can you provide a screenshot (via the forum editor's Options page)?

Pegasus was a fresh install, and installed to C:\PMail directory. Mail folder was copied from old HD to new directory on new machine. Pegasus worked just fine for approx. 2 weeks on new machine.

Thanks!

Hi Michael,

In preview mode or a reader window?  Neither one shows the message body.

Does the raw view (in a reader window) show all message data?  Yes

Can you provide a screenshot (via the forum editor's Options page)?  It appears that I can't create a file small enough to meet the 64kb max. attachment size.

Thanks!

You stated in reply and to Michael asked about preview or list mode among other things.

You stated new default install to c:\pmail location.

A new complete install, not as an update, would place files into c:\pmail with winpm-32.exe being in c:\pmail\programs location and mail boxes in c:\pmail\mail\<username> with c:\pmail\maiil\admin being created by default. A new complete install, unless later changed, would be in preview mode by default too.

The path you showed has bee altered or customized along the way manually. It is no longer a default install as shown so just copy of data from one install and paste to another install does not work. I know and had a hard lesson in that myself a few days ago. To restore your data only the subdirs below \mail\ should be copied over. Anything above that involves path information and configuration. It is even possible to have had winpm-32 and related files  present in two location and paths, one set in c:\pmail and one in c:\pmail\programs locatons.

Where are the actual *.pmm message folder files located when doing a search or dir from command prompt starting at c:\pmail and /s to recurse. Do cd c:\pmail and then dir *.pmm /s/p

Then copy or take note of full  path to the folder files and companion .pmi file of same name. The new mail messages are not in folders yet and are the *.cnm files in cL\pmail and below. Same thing again, Do c:\pmail and dir *.cnm /s/p and record that also  Are they in one or two locations? They should match what is shown in Help, About, Info for new mail location.

It is possible configuration was picked up, and paths, from a formerlly run install or another install attempt. The pmail.ini file  records the last run information and that file is viewable with  plain text editor ssuch as notepad.  The time there sill be the last configuration save time, may be different from the  curent date stamp of the OS. Pegasus Mail does not change or overwrite existing data it finds, only reads it, but all c:\pmail and below must not be marked read only attribute by the OS. If so the R attribute must be manually removed from the files for use.

Bring some more info back and let us ponder this thing again and in more depth. We need to see or have some way to reproduce what you are experiencing.
