Mail header date question
The standard for the zone (do the parentheses here mean optional?) says:

zone            =       (( "+" / "-" ) 4DIGIT) / obs-zone

It seems to me that the part of the Date: header in parentheses, besides being wrong, is unnecessary.
The paratheses don't mean optional - the slash means OR. The timezone consists of "a plus OR minus and four digits in format hhmm representing difference to GMT" OR "the old fashioned and since early 1990s OBSOLETE abbreviations for timezones (like GMT, EDT)".
What I don't understand is how "Date: Tue, 01 Feb 2011 22:09:23 +0000 (GMT+00:00)" could end up as being interpreted as "31/01/2011 7:00 PM EDT.  Still, if the date is not consistent with the standard, I suppose anything could happen, though it seems to be consistently wrong from three differerent mail clients.
You have to ask the programmer of the code for analysing the date-header in all his misspelled permutations. David's code seems to handle many permutations ... but obviously not all. I know the code will ignore something like "+0000 GMT" and show correct time.

Using Pegasus as my client with a Mercury server, I have noticed a message which is shown with yesterday's date (31 Jan 11, 19:00).  This same date and time is shown by other mail clients.  However, in the raw view of the message, all dates show as 01 Feb 11 (even after allowing for GMT offsets).

Can someone tell me how the 31 Jan date is picked up by the client?

Thank you

Gordon

What do the headers actually show? Can you copy and paste the raw view Date: line so we see what the time-zone is, please?

Also, do you have 'Apply time zone correction' enabled under the Folder menu? If so, try turning it off, assuming you are in the UK.

Greenman - Here is the header information (I hope I have removed my personal information!).  I am not in the UK (though I came from there 36 years ago).  So far as I can see, timezone correction only applies to SMTP (though I thought that I had seen some other setting that would affect incoming mail, though I can't find it).  The other clients that I tried, Outlook Express and Windows Live Mail, showed the same (apparently incorrect) time.

Thank you

Gordon

Yes.  Unfortunately, this is due to Pmail's slavish insistence on header dates strict compliance with the email standard, and getting confused by the added "friendly time zone" bit within parens.  Pmail is the ONLY email client of which I am aware that gets confused in this manner. Hopefully, the next revision to Pmail will relax this and become more user friendly in this regard.  But don't hold your breath -- this "bug" has been identified and its removal requested multiple times in the past.

Maybe, but the original poster has said (as I understand it) that the incorrect date is shown by 'other email clients' and specifically Outlook Express and Windows Live Mail.

John, both these statements are wrong: With regard to the latter see what the original poster wrote about M$ mailers; with regard to the former: I posted this report to the (closed) beta-testers mailing list and David Harris' comment stated exactly the opposite (I'm sure he wouldn't mind me quoting him here):

The date format is strictly legal, but because my date parser has been heavily "hardened" to handle non-standard date formats, the comment part fools it into thinking it's a non-standard form. Unlike some of the most way-out date variations out there, it might be possible to handle this one, simply by reducing the comment out, something my address parsing code can do easily.
So there's a good chance to get this one fixed some time in the future.

I didn't realize that I was opening up this small can of worms!

So, if I understand correctly, the part in parentheses is wrong and doesn't meet RFC2822 standards.  I had missed that.  The standard for the zone (do the parentheses here mean optional?) says:

zone            =       (( "+" / "-" ) 4DIGIT) / obs-zone

It seems to me that the part of the Date: header in parentheses, besides being wrong, is unnecessary.

Thank you

Gordon
