Start with a basic and simple test first. Hit F2 key while in winpmail and then hit Search and when  you see wife name double click on it. If a new message jumps up addressed to wife then you can send to her using that. There are one or more settings in Tools, Internet options, SMTP that effect ability to send to local username. To send, assuming settings are ok, you just put the name used for user on cystem in the To: line of message editor new mail.  For example to send to admin just type that in To: block or if the name  under ..pmail\mail\wife send mail to <wife>.

If you have checked the block to use for all adddresses then mail must go to server. Unchecked local delivery is allowed.

I'm using pegmail as a quaisi mail server for the two of us over our residential LAN. For the last eight years. Up until this last weekend I've been able to send email to 'wife' without the '@mydomainname'. The message would be sent directly to her machine over the LAN. 'Wife' is a defined user in the pmail setup. 

My ISP domain hosting service went toes up over the weekend for whatever. In an effort to change my domain hosting to another service I added new entries in the Receiving (POP3) and Sending (SMTP) definitions in the Internet Mail Options. This ended in futility. My original DNS came back to life so I'm somewhat back to square one.

But.

Now when I send wife an email to be transported over the LAN, user to user so to speak, peg insists on sending the message to my DNS host mail server where it gets bounced since the address isn't a valid email address, simply 'wife' instead of 'wife@ .....'. Hope that makes sense. Where in the Pmail setup is the control for sending user to user mail over a LAN rather than having everything sent to the remote server and back again?

Go to the SMTP setup and make sure you have not checked "Use for all outgoing mail regardless of address"

Usually when you enter an address such as "DAVID", which has no domain portion, Pegasus Mail regards it as a local address and attempts to deliver it to the user based on the assumption that he can be found on the machine you are using. If you are the only person who uses your computer, however, then there will be no other users on your system and this assumption will not be valid. Checking this control tells Pegasus Mail to pass all mail to the remote host for processing and not to presume that any addresses are local to your machine. You should only check this control if you are the only person who uses your machine.
