HELP! -> Sympatico SMTP in Canada

I know this thread is a bit old. But I thought I'd post an update on my progress with this issue. I never solved it and never succeeded in using the 'new and improved' email system that Sympatico implemented. I used my hosting company's relay mail SMTP service for about a month and then discovered that Sympatico's old mail system was again working. They either reimplemented it due to a flood of complaining customers, or perhaps it was simply broken and they fixed it.

At some point I'll call their tech support and ask to be walked through the process. But I fear it will be a painful and frustrating experience and not something I look forward to. If ever I do come up with the magic formula I'll be sure to post it here. For now the old way works again and if it ain't broke ...

I've used Pegases for years with outgoing email via sympatico.ca and wish to continue. But I'm being pestered recently by Sympatico to reconfigure my SMPT settings to something that no longer works with Pegasus. I fear that they're cutting off service to my usual settings that DO work. My options seem to be to either figure out what they want me to use, change ISPs, or change email clients.

I have my own domain and POP mailbox, so I don't need Sympatico's incoming mail service. But for outgoing I've alway's used 'smpt1.sympatico.ca'. That has now ceased to work and their website states that they do not support: Thunderbird,The Bat!, Eudora, IncrediMail ... and I assume if they knew about Pegasus they would have added that too!

They DO support:  Outlook 2003, 2007 and Outlook Express (yikes!!!)
I've tried a number of interpretations of their instructions without success.

If there are any Pegasus users in Canada who have been able to comply with Sympatico.ca's requirements I'd really appreciate some guidance.

Here's what they request I use:

"Outgoing mail server (SMTP)

SMTP Server: smtphm.sympatico.ca
Port: 25 (or 587 if port 25 does not work
Authentication: Yes

User name: Email address (e.g: jsmith@sympatico.ca or jsmith@bell.net) and password (e.g.: a123456z)

TLS/SSL Required: Yes (select TLS if available, if not, select SSL)"

Thank you to anyone who can offer some help.

Have you tried port 465 for ssl/tls on the smtp server?

Should I? I don't see that as a setting they're recommending...
Outgoing mail server (SMTP)
  1. SMTP Server: smtphm.sympatico.ca
  2. Port: 25 (or 587 if port 25 does not work)
  3. Authentication required: Yes
  4. TLS/SSL Required: Yes (select TLS if available, if not, select SSL)

They say they do TLS/SSL and port 465 is the default SSL port for SMTP.  Give it a shot all that can go wrong is that it will not work.  If this does not work ask then what oddball port they do use for SSL.

Looked at the Sympatico site and they have implemented SSL using Port 25.

Noticed also that people using Avast to scan outgoing mail were experiencing problems because Avast

was interfering with the connection on port 25.

Are you sure about that?  Have you actually tested using SSL against port 25?  I know that STLS would normally use the default ports for making a connection but I've never seen a server accept both STLS and SSL on the same port.

I'm swamped with work just now so I can only poke at things again tomorrow. For now I'm sending mail via a relay service offered by my website host.

Too bad there's no one here who's already figured out exactly what they want...

I assume that in the SMTP settings I should use 'Via STARTTLS' and  the port # they suggest.

The I have to choose one of the following

*******************************
SMTP Authentication

1) Do a prior POP3 login to authenticate before senfing mail.

2) Login to the SMTP server using the following details:

3) Login to the SMTP servcer ueing a POP3 username/password

4) Do not use CRAM-MD5 authentication even if it is advertised.

*******************************

Here I think I need to select #2 and use the login username/password I got for the default email account that they set up for me. But I've never used that account as I have my own domain and get all my mail from there.

Does this sound right?

There are probably many many users that have done this but Pegasus Mail is setup to use either STARTTLS or SSL and STARTTLS does use the default SMTP ports 25 & 587

> I assume that in the SMTP settings I should use 'Via STARTTLS' and  the port # they suggest.

That should work, at least that what they said to do.

They do NOT say they are using any sort of ESMTP AUTH command though so you need not worry too much about the authorization settings. If they turn it on you could use either #2 with your username/password or #3 pointing at your POP3 account setup with the same username/password.  That said here is what I get when I telnet into port 587 of the host.  Obviously they are using the Hotmail hosts.

No testing.  I looked at the Bell Canada/Sympatico site.  It has detailed instructions on configuring various (mainly microsoft) email clients.

In each case TLS/SSL is stipulated and either port 25 or 587 can be used. Nowhere is there any reference to STARTTLS and there is a perception that Sympatico has implemented SSL on port 25.

Associated support/discussion forums contain very vocal criticism of Bell Canada's decision and there is much confusion re how to configure non-specified email clients.

Since my last post I've looked at the Thunderbird forum and there are reports there dating back to late last year, that STARTTLS does work with that client when connecting to the Sympatico SMTP server on ports 25 and 587.

Provided STARTTLS does work, what appears to have happened is that the email clients supported by Sympatico are those that (coincidentally) automatically initiate STARTTLS on the basis of the nominated port and that confusion is arising among customers whose unsupported clients present STARTTLS as an option, eg Pmail and Thunderbird, because Sympatico has not stated that it is using STARTTLS and they are persisting with attempts at direct SSL connection.

I have read all of the postings and tried all of the settings (I think), but nothing works. I've also turned off my firewall (ZoneAlarm) and disabled my anti-virus (Avira). My Pegasus was working perfectly until one week or so ago, but now I can't send any emails. This is VERY frustrating.

Other than blocking our my e-mail address, there doesn't appear to be anything else that I need to hide in the WPM file (I don't see any passwords in the log). Is that right? Also.....where do I find the associated help entry? I've looked for Internet Log Session in the Help file and didn't find anything.

Sorry for the newbie questions....

There's a Help button on the General options page, after clicking it you'll see a page called Internet Options containing a link called General Internet mail settings leading to a page with an entry called Create Internet session logs (advanced diagnostic use only) at the bottom ...
