Pegasus 4.61 with Windows 7 AND IE 9 update (crashes)

Hi,

Just in case it's useful :-

Downloaded/installed recommended (critical) IE 9 update for Windows 7 and find the Pegasus (4.61) crashes upon trying to open any message with this combo. Rolled back the IE update and Pegasus works again.

 Regards.

Same here, but with Vista Business. How do you roll back to previous IE version ?

Just download the latest IERenderer update, there's no need to uninstall IE 9: I currently cannot guarantee that it doesn't crash at all after doing so but it'll certainly not crash each time you open an HTML message (not just any message, plain text shouldn't be affected), IOW: It's work in progress and the version history hasn't been updated for the very last changes. Please report back on any further issues.

Don't ask how/why, I do not know, but I had the problem when opening any type message not just HTML I would agree HTML would seem more logical considering it is associated with IE (I don't open HTML messages).

I'm happy leaving well alone at the moment, I don't wish to risk e-mail problems on a hope/prayer or maybe it'll be ok!

I did a System Restore to remove the IE update, now everything is back to normal.

Regards.

I can't really imagine how this would be happening: Are you sure this weren't multipart/alternative messages where the HTML part was displayed (requires Tools => Options => Message reader => Where a choice of format exists, display the fancy version to be enabled)? Displaying plain text messages doesn't involve IE 9 at all, so there may be something else involved which we might be able to figure out using the  MiniDump tool.

I was also having severe crash problems after the Microsoft update and reinstalled PM v4.52.  The crashes with 4.61 happened mostly when I was running searches and filters.

If removing IErenderer files solves the issues, which files would I need to remove/rename?

Thanks!

I removed all files named IERenderer (.exe, .fff, .ffr)

You can just use the uninstaller (via control panel where you uninstall all your applications).

I'm somewhat confused, is the advice now to install  the IERenderer update or to completely remove the IERenderer ?

I have not installed any seperate files, but I do have an IERenderer.dll in my PMAIL/Programs/IERenderer/ folder. However there is no listing of this utility in the Control Panels uninstall list.

The advice was how to remove it if you needed to, i.e. via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, however if you haven't installed any updates it is probably not in there.

In your case you could install the latest update to see if that solves your problems.

You can then remove it via Control panel if necessary

There's no such advice, you decide what to do depending on whether you encounter problems or not. You may try the update if having IE 9 installed on your system, otherwise there's no change required. The problem with the IE 9 related update is that it currently may cause other crash issues in certain environments which I couldn't track down so far.
However there is no listing of this utility in the Control Panels uninstall list.
The uninstall entry is called "Pegasus Mail HTML Renderer ..."

My situation is:

When crashes happened, i had not installed IER separately, so it is likely that it is installed with pm installer. It's probably the files in the PM directory.

Following a suggestion from support, i installed the latest IER.

Crashes happened again, so i went to check the PM directory, and saw IER files... but i didn't see the IER directory (although it was certainly here...) ! I removed the files from pm directory, and then it worked.

Following previous post here, i removed the IER directory, and PM crashed again, but differently.

So, dll IERenderer v 2.4.0.3 in the IERenderer directory works fine.

There may be confusions at loading time when there are two files (exe and dll) maybe ?
When crashes happened, i had not installed IER separately, so it is likely that it is installed with pm installer. It's probably the files in the PM directory.
Sure, it's included with v4.61 by default as announced, and there is no "separate" install, it's always installed by the same installer to the same locations no matter whether run via Pegasus Mail's setup or the stand-alone setup (which is used silently by Pegasus Mail's installer).
Following previous post here, i removed the IER directory, and PM crashed again, but differently.
This is exactly why you should not fiddle around with the setup unless using the uninstaller! People other than the beta-testers (and even not all of these) do not know about the implications of removing or adding arbitrary files! It's not about simply adding or removing a single file ...
So, dll IERenderer v 2.4.0.3 in the IERenderer directory works fine.
I'm sorry, but I have no idea what your setup looks like now and whether it uses IERenderer at all or not. I would call this an undefined state and all I can recommend now is a complete reinstall of Pegasus Mail 4.61 after removing all files and directories containing the word "renderer". If using IE 9 I would also recommend to disable or uninstall IERenderer completely afterwards as I'm seeing reports about various unpredictable troubles under certain conditions (currently unknown and very hard to identify as I cannot duplicate them in my test environments).

And as a final note: Although symptoms may look the same they don't always point to the same issue, IOW: This thread may already mix up different issues, so my comments to one poster may not help the other one in all cases, please be aware of this!
