Subject line truncates message titles
Can't believe that PM has made such an elementary mistake as not allowing customers to adjust number of characters allocated to message title in the normal folders.
It's a limitation of the current folder format: For accelerating folder processing a so-called index file is created which works like a simple database with fixed field lengths for caching the most important information about all messages in a folder. I'm sure David Harris had his reasons for imposing such a limit when he created this format, and I'm sure emails have become a lot larger containing more information in due course - which is why he's currently working on a completely new message storage system for Pegasus Mail and Mercury.

The message subject line as seen in the folders is only 35 characters long and it truncates all my message titles. Unfortunately I receive multiple automated business messages which start with more than 35 characters of text and end with an order number which I am then losing. In certain folders I cannot distinguish between dozens of messages - they all have the same name! How can I change the length of the subject line to 50 or more characters?

To clarify: Have you widened the 'Subject' column of the folder list by 'dragging' (with the mouse) the right-hand side of that column to the right?

In ordinary folders of the current folder format you cannot change this (a future version will overcome this limit). The only workarounds would be to keep these messages in the new mail folder (although there's an auto-refresh limit of 750 messages after which the folder view doesn't automatically get updated anymore) or using public folders (at the cost of lower processing speed especially when opening a folder the first time during a Pegasus Mail session).

Thanks for the info. It's not viable to use the new mail folder and public folders have got me rather confused so I'll have to study that. Can't believe that PM has made such an elementary mistake as not allowing customers to adjust number of characters allocated to message title in the normal folders. They must assume that there is no useful information in a title after 35 characters - a BIG assumption. Anyway, thanks for the advice. I'll see what I can do.

There are a number of other e-mail clients available that will allow you to see the entire subject line if you expand the window enough.  If this is really a critical function for you then you might want to give one on these a try.

That said, I personally do not like a subject line that's more than a few characters long and I've fixed the applications that for some reason or the other seem to need to add a paragraph or so of text before any real information related specifically to the actual message is provided.  ;-)
