People replying to e-mail containing local addresses

We had exactly the same issue. I just asked our staff to put the full address user@domain.com for local users in the cc field rather than the short local address.  Pegasus Mail has the ability to remember addresses and will auto-complete them.

I searched the forum but I didn't find an answer. (maybe it's too obvious...)

Sometimes, somebody sends emails to an internet address and cc to a local one (wanting the cc to be able to receive a reply just in case...)

If the recipient replies to all, he will receive an error, and obviously the cc won't receive anything being the address malformed.

Infact, the local address, sent to internet will be modified by the provider into something similar to local_name@smtpserver.myprovider.it which is a non existing internet email address.

Is there a way to tell Pegasus to convert a local address to the correspondent internet address *just in case* it is (by mistake) sent to internet?

Cheers.

Nicola

If you force all mail through Mercury then it will have a full e-mail address.  Here's the MERCURY UDG entry.

              Gateway name : [INTERNET         ]
            *New mail path :
    Is a program to run? :  N
     *New mail search mask :
       *Outgoing mail path :  \\SERVER\VOLUME\DIRECTORY
    *Run for outgoing mail :
          *Filename format :  ~d~d.PMX
   Run to validate address :
     *Reply address format :  "~p" <~8@host.domain>
   Accepts SMTP addresses? :  Y
Simple message headers? :  'Glue' headers
     UUEncode attachments? :  Y
           Burst messages? :  N    Gateway processes BCC? : N
       Strip gateway name? :  Y
Force all mail through? :  Y

The ~p is the personal name, ~8 the account name.  You can
also use ~p<~r> and the Reply to: address will be used.

We don't have Mercury...

I could make an address list containing all the local addresses and for each of them specify the internet address, but doing so would make every local mail to be routed through internet instead doing it just in case of a mistake of "mixed addresses email"...

Is there another way by Pegasus Mail itself?

(We are on a W2003 server)

Create a system addressbook containing all user local e-mail addresses and then when Pegasus Mail sends the mail is will be resolved by the system addressbook to the SMTP e-mail address.  For example in my case the local address SUPPORT would have support@tstephenson.com in the system book.

That's what I wrote. (maybe my english is not so good) :)

Doing so will make every intentional local email to be routed to internet instead. (correct?)

My wish is converting a local address into the internet one, just in case the email sent to internet contains some local addresses (CC or many recipients).

If I send a mail to jack@outerworlddomain.com and CC to "JohnInMyOffice" (local PM address)  instead of "John@ourdomain.com",

the receipient will see as if I sent CC to

"JohnInMyOffice@smtp.ourdomain.com" so his eventual reply will issue an error.

I hope I explained better... :)

Correct, they all go to the SMTP host supporting your domain.  There is no other way to keep the local username out of a message.  If you were using Mercury though to support you local domain then this would be handled by Mercury and sent to the local account.

Think about it.  If you send something using a local address is will be sent directly to the local address because Pegasus Mail  knows it's local.  Nothing else in your setup is available to modify the mail in the queue and if it did then it would not be sent locally.

Ok, since the problem is only when "outer world" people is replying, what if I try to set a "reply to" with the internet address for each user?

That may help with some e-mail clients but since many (most) use some sort of "reply to all" it  will not solve the problem of an address "David" in a Cc: field going to a david@receiving.domain.com instead of david@sending.domain.com.  If you want any sort of e-mail security at all you should never allow these username only e-mail address to get to the internet.
