Adding new accounts

Sorry for the duplicate questions in my recent post. Looks like I didn't read all the responses to my queries! Thanks for your answer. I will work on that today.

Sorry for the duplicate questions in my recent post. Looks like I didn't read all the responses to my queries! Thanks for your answer. I will work on that today.

I downloaded the newest version of PM yesterday. I am currently a Thunderbird user and like the interface of PM better than TB.

I have 8 email accounts using the same POP server. In TB, it's easy to add the new accounts. In PM, I am having problems trying to figure out how to add all 8 accounts. It's not straight forward enough for me. Maybe the terminology is different.

I want to try out PM, but I have spent hours trying to figure this out and I'm frustrated! I have installed and deleted the program 2 times already.

For example, suppose my main POP3 email account is "Family" using "abcxyz@somewhere.net" and another one is "Friends" using "cbazyx@somewhere.net", and so on up to 8 accounts. I want to check all 8 accounts at the same time using my main email account as the default login (ala Thunderbird). My ISP is Earthlink and I have to use smtpauth.earthlink.net for the server outgoing messages.

Can anyone please give me detailed, step by step guidance in setting this up?

Thanks.

Pmail offers several ways of handling multiple email addresses with varying levels of sophistication.

The simplest method is to enter your the pop and smtp server settings for your primary address via Tools - Internet Options, and then add your supplementary pop accounts to the Receiving (Pop3) list.

You can look also at Identities and and Multiple mailboxes in the Help files for more info re other options.

Thanks for the help, but I still cannot seem figure this out. I have 8 email addresses under 1 account. Just can't get it. It's such a different concept from Thunderbird and I admit defeat trying to add the additional email addresses along with Identities in PM. If I could just get this concept I would like to try it. I've deleted it again (for the 4th time) and am going back to TB. :(

Have a nice day.

That is your decision and if you do I wish you well.

If you do decide to try once more I suggest the following:

Repeated installing and uninstalling of the progam is unlikely to be helpful, as your problem lies with the configuration not the installation.

Do not worry about Identities in the first instance. Pmail instals with a single "default" Identity, as you will see in the window on the main toolbar.

Reinstal the program and enter the server settings for your main email address in Tools - Internet options. Use the wizard if you wish.

If you can get that working we can then go to the next step, depending on how you use your other email addresses, particularly whether you send mail from only one, some or all of them.

Cheers

Stick with it Papa. Once you have the AH HA moment all will be well. We'll help you get there.

You might want to check out this post regarding identities: http://community.pmail.com/forums/post/28320.aspx. That post lists two options though there are others so if it confuses you just forget it for now. Ask additional questions here and that AH HA moment will come.

If you haven't spent some time with the manual and help files they are both extremely well done and are worth attention. I'm not saying RTFM just pointing you to sources from which you might acquire additional insight.

Thanks, guys. I'll spend some time tomorrow with PM.

Questions:

When you talk about "multiple users"...do you mean more than 1 user on a computer (aka John, Mary, Susie, Tom, etc.) and each one having a different account on the computer?

In my case, I am the only one who ever uses my computer. I have 8 different email accounts with my ISP. What I want to do is to be able to send and/or receive email from each account/identity (like I do in TB). I want to check my email (all accounts/identies) all at one time and have all new messages go into 1 common folder. However, I want to be able to "move" the received emails (after reading them) to a designated folder (1 for each account/identity). My ISP requires SMTP authenication for sending mail (smtpauth.isp.net). Suppose my primary email address is johndoe@isp.net. My login on my ISP requires me to login under johndoe@isp.net to check email for any/all accounts/identities. Actually, what puzzles me is that I have tried several different email programs over the years and all of them used "accounts" and were pretty straight forward. It appears that PM, for some strange reason, is set up differently, though. Whether that's good or bad, I haven't figured out yet.

By the way, I am using Win7 32-bit.

Unless directed otherwise Pmail instals with a single mailbox within which you can create one or more identities.

Multiple identities is one way of managing multiple accounts.

However Pmail is capable of running multiple mailboxes each with a separate username.

These mailboxes can be used by one user or a number of users, each having their own mailbox on a single machine or on networked machines.

This provides an alternative method of managing multiple accounts.

When installing Pmail you should select the multiple user/mailbox option to provide greater functionality later on.

You need only configure one user at that point.

I take this to mean that when you log in as johndoe, as the primary address, all your email addresses are checked automatically and that you do not have separate usernames and passwords for the ancillary addresses.

There are computer users and Pegasus Mail users. A Pegasus Mail user is simply another mailbox. For instance, I use Pegasus Mail for a small business of 13 employees. I have 15 Pegasus Mail users (13 employees, one general mailbox, and one mailbox for the accounting dept.). I personally handle the mail for three of those users (mailboxes), my personal one, the general mailbox and the accounting department mailbox. I open Pegasus Mail as the general mail user and spend my day in that mailbox. I have the other two attached to the folder list making it easy to routinely check them throughout the day. Since I might generate mail as any one of these "users" I have created an identity for each as well so that when I reply to a message in the accounting mailbox my reply appears to have come from the accounting email address. I happen to use Mercury to retrieve mail via POP3 from my domain hosted mailboxes but if I didn't, each identity would be configured to retrieve mail from its mailbox in the Tools|Internet Options|Receiving (POP3) configuration. Also on that configuration page is where you control whether that specific indentity's mailbox gets checked and whether other identity mailboxes get checked when you are working in Pegasus Mail as this identity. Oh, I also have gmail account so that's another identity but not another user since all that mail is retrieved into the general mail user (general mail mailbox).

That said, it is possible to be one user and one identity and still handle mail from 8 different hosted mailboxes. You can simply create entries for each of the 8 hosted mailboxes in Tools|Internet Options|Receiving (POP3) configuration and all eight will be checked and mail retrieved into one Pegasus Mail mailbox.

You can have a myriad of combinations of users and identities. I told you about the identities I have that are associated with users(mailboxes) but I also have identities that are not associated with a mailbox. For instance, when I post to discussion list I want the reply to address to include the list address. I have an identity configured with that reply to address and always try to post to the discussion list as that identity.

I remember trying to understand identities and users so know your pain. Just keep in mind that a Pegasus Mail "User" is a mailbox and each "User" can have multiple identities.

It is also worth noting that many of the configuration settings in Pegasus Mail are identity specific. This is part of what makes identities valuable. You can create identities with different configuration settings and switch between them as needed. This adds an amazing amount of flexibility to Pegasus Mail. I don't know of a published list that tells which settings are identity specific so this is a bit of trial and error but by the time you get to this point you will have a better understanding of how it all works and playing with identities won't be daunting.

Hope this helps.

It does help! I will be working on this as time allows. I have printed your responses (as well as the other responses) and will make another go at it.

I do appreciate the help and consideration from you guys. This just makes me want to learn PM all the more. I'm determined to keep on keeping on.

OK. I configured all 8 of my email addresses using one ("Default") identity. I have it set to check all accounts at one time. Then I used "Selective mail download" and tested each one individually and got no error messages. I tried to send an email from my "Default" account to one of the other accounts and I got the following error message: "550 Please configure your mail client to use authentication". Where do I fix that?

Under Tools/Internet Options/Receiving (POP3).....I wanted to check the box "Don't check this identity when checking multiple identities". But when I check the box for ONE of the identities, ALL identities are automatically checked. What do I do about this?

Moving a step at a time.....

Thanks

Go to Tools - Internet options - Sending(SMTP) - Edit

On the General tab enter the server name and 587 as the port number.

On the Security tab check Never under Use SSL/TLS.

Check the second option under SMTP authentication and enter your full email address as the Username and your normal password.

From what you have written it looks like you have successfully configured the default identity to handle all mail. As I said in an earlier post this is the simplest way to handle multiple email accounts, but has limitations, particularly when sending mail.

For greater functionality you can now look at using multiple identities.

If you go to Tools - Identities you will se a dialogue box that enables you to create more identities.

You can configure each identity by selecting it in the Identity Selector (drop down box) on the toolbar.

If you want to use eight identities (default plus seven) there is a fair bit of work involved.

Start with Tools- Internet options and enter the server settings for each identity (email address) and get that working first.

We can then discuss the general options.

Looks like James has responded with good advise but consider this. You only have one identity so when you check the box "Don't check this identity when checking multiple identities" you turn off all 8 accounts because you have effectively turned off all POP3 processing for the Default identity. Remember, the 8 POP3 host accounts are being processed as part of the Default identity.

If you want to temporarily disable checking of one of the POP3 hosts you can use the disable button. This will keep that POP3 host available but will disable it until you enable it again. Note: the disable button is also the enable button. Its label and function will change depending on the status of the POP3 host entry you select.

Great. I did that and it worked. How do I send email from one of the accounts (identities) other than "Default"? When I try to send an email to someone other than my primary address, it sends a "copy to self" always showing my "default" email address and not the account (identity) that I sent it from. Everything seems to use "default". How can I fix this?

Under "Internet Options/Receiving", when I tick "Check whenever new mail is opened" for a particular account, it ticks them for each one. How can I fix this to just check the one that I just ticked. The same thing happens when I tick "Don't check this identity when checking multiple identities".....all of them will be ticked. How can these be fixed?

Thanks.
