Can't find newer messages or folders

It appears you have or had somewhere along the way a reinstall. You have have leftovers from two different configurations, one single user mode, and the other the newer multi user mode. The question now is which is which and which pmm files have the newer messages and which  the older messages. The other question is which pmail.cfg file and only running PCONFIG is going to tell the current configuration and current home and new mail location. pconfig is 16bit MSDos program you must run from the command prompt on that XP machine of yours. Close winpm-32 before running it. You can safely run pconfig and exit without saving.

Then after you report what you found we can proceed. The bottom line is one setup or the other must have all message folder  pairs copied to the correct location you want to keep for home mail location. I suggest it should be c:\pmail\mail\admin as newer versions will be doing multi user mode installs by default and at any time you may want to add or use another user name (configuration) and you will be ready to add/delete/change users. Additionally you may want to use or add identity (settings) to one or none username.

Then all of the *.pmr and *.pm! pairs need to be in c:\pmail\mail\admin or in c:\pmail\programs if they are system wide books (I doubt you actually have any now). All not marked read only of course too.

Your old 4.52 must have been installed to update and even older version and the oldest version and .ini settings used and then updated. Long ago single user mode was the default type of install.

Hello,

I recently had to reformat the hard drive on my computer because of a computer virus. I saved all my data, including the mail folder from Pegasus. I then reinstalled pegasus v4.52 on my windows XP computer. I replaced the mail folder with the one I saved with all my messages, however only post 2006 messages and folders are showing, nothing later than 2006. I've verified that there are newer messages in the mail/admin folders by looking at the dates on the files. Not sure why I am not seeing newer saved messages, or message folders/address books that were created after 2006. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers...Vince

When you restored or copied old \mail and below did you also make sure media or backup program did not give files the R read only attribute? WinPMail can't work with files marked read only. Check the properties and remove the R if any. That is step one.

Then when you have placed the old \mail and below had you already run winpm-32 and were there already  messages folders with contents that may be same name? If so it may be necessary to do some additional work to get all existing folders and unique id's straightened out. One method is to, while not running, rename hierarch.pm to .bak and restart winpm-32 again. That causes progrfram to recreate file and recognize all folders again.

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for your quick response. I checked the properities, and the files were not marked hidden or read only. I then tried your second suggestion, but unfortunately that didn't change anything. I found two hierach.pm files, one in the MAIL folder and one in the ADMIN folder. I changed them both to .BAK files. When I went back to look at those files after I changed them,  I noticed that the in the Mail folder I now had two hierarch files, one BAK and one PM. Should I delete the PM file and try restarting the program again? If this doesn't work, do you think I should uninstall the program and try again?

Cheers....Vince

It sound like you have messages folders (*.pmm and *.pmi pairs) in two locations and one needs to be relocated. In current versions and installs they should not be in c:\pmail\mail location but shoud be in \,mail\<username> locations. Only thing in \mail should be the .usr file.

Can you operate comfordably at the command prompt? cd to c:\pmail and do dir *.pmm /s and show me where they are located now. Also do dir *.cnm /s and show me where the .cnm files are located at  present.  All the messages folder pairs and all the .cnm files should be located in c:\pmail\mail\admin location.  We can move on from there when we know where those file are as well as dir winpm-32.exe ./s and I assume it will be found in c:\pmail\programs.

If still have Pegasus Mail running then also do Help, About, Info button and copy and paste in the display from that.Later we will need to tackle restore of *.pmr and *.pm! address book pair and a few other things possibly. What we don't want is the old pmail.ini file(s)

Hi Jerry,

Had to do a little research before I could answer your questions. First of all we have PMM files in both MAIL and ADMIN folders. And we have CNN files in both of these same locations. Secondly I don't see a \mail\<username> folder. Could this be part of the problem? Here are the folders I have: In the PMAIL folder there are two folders, MAIL & Programs. In the Mail folder there is an ADMIN folder. In the ADMIN folder is a folder called RmtFiles. Inside the Programs folder are two folders, DEFAULTS & RESOURCE.  Here is the information from the Info screen:
