Ok, do it. Now there are a couple of other things to tend to immediately also when working with win7 and a couple of pitfalls due to recent windows update and/or install of IE9 also. Be sure to download and install the latest IERenderer or BearHtml if that is your choice. Note the top toolbar and icon/button on far right. That turns IERender off or on and also shows version number in the About and also may be used to download latest version. After download you then shut down winpm-32 and  run IERender.exe and setup begins. To update Bear go to the download site and then with winpm-32 clossed extract the contents of the .zip archive to c:\pmail\programs and then restart winpm-32 when ready.

Now you choose which rendering engine for HTML messages you want to use and with all child windows closed within winpmail you use the icon/button to toggle use IERenderer off/on.

I'm an old user of Pegasus Mail and I'm returning to it after absconding to The Bat a number of years ago until recently.

I'm now trying to see how I could configure Pmail to work with Windows 7 64 bit. Before I dive into the details of setting up folders, filters, templates etc. I would be grateful for some advice.

I notice that there is a warning about not installing Pmail in the Program Files directory. I followed this, but I really want to have the configuration files and emails to be stored in my Documents directory, that is in c:\users\<myname>\documents\pmail. I moved the mailbox from the default location using the relevant menu entry in Tools --> Options --> General settings --Mailbox location. I also used DOSbox to run pconfig.exe in order to complete this process. Well, at least I hope that running pconfig.exe did the job! Anyway, as a result of this I now have in the c:\pmail a subdirectory called Mail and another one called Programs. In the Mail subdirectory there are two subdirectories: "Admin" and "Single-user mode". In the Admin subdirectory there is a pmail.ini file, but the same filename with a different content and a later date also exists in the c:\users\<myname>\documents\pmail subdirectory.

Do you think that the above setup is allright to enable running Pmail without problems?

Do not do it that way. Install to c:\pmail accepting default location and let it create user(s) also and it will install by default in multi user mode. Your new mail location will then be c:\pmail\mail\admin

The layout and location of files are different now and winpm-32 and other executables go in c:\pmail\programs locaton by default on new clean full install.

Win7 is different than other earlier OS versions in several ways.

Thank you for the replies. My configuration is the same as the default except for the TMP and TEMP entries where obviously it shows my name in the directory path and also in the following entry after I moved the mailbox:

Home mailbox location: C:\USERS\<myname>\DOCUMENTS\PMAIL

I wonder if it's possible to move the new mailbox location which currently is:

New mailbox location: C:\PMAIL\MAIL\Admin

Also what files or directories containing configuration settings should I include in my backup?

That should work for home mail box location and I like to keep to 8.3 conventions when possible but that looks ok as long as no spaces in the  path. Keep in mind the OS limits of 255 chars for total path length including file name.. You can try and should be able to move new mail location to the same path also.

As far as backup all \mail and below will get all configuration items normally used for all users  plus the .usr file.. There is another one also but only needed if you have run PCONFIG and changed anything or if you have created any User Defined Gateway liks I  use. I'd back up pmail.cfg and pegasus.ini files one time. That file is stored in the pmail\programs location.  That will also get any unfiltered new mail *.cnm files in user\new mail locations..

Install DosBox and then run 16bit Pconfig or do it on a 32bit OS machine and then copy resulting pmail.cfg file over to the win7-64 machine pmail\programs location. I needed DosBox for other reason so had it available already. It used to be necessary to run 16 bit RESCOM also but 4.61 and later have 32bit RESCOM now. 5.x is supposed to have 32 bit Pconfig when it begins production.

I believe I'm ready now to plunge deeper into setting up Pmail. :)
