Windows Live Mail and Mercury 4.72 IMAP4 SSL/TLS issues

I have now installed the latest version of Thunderbird and this seems to be working pretty well with Mercury.  I am not even seeing empty message bodies, which was happening before .... so far.  However, when I start up TB, a message appears saying "The IMAP server [account name] does not support the selected authentication method ......".  Despite this, messages are being downloaded by TB.  Is this normal when TB works withi Mercury?  I have set  TB to use STARTTLS.  The SSL/TLS option doesn't work.

I am trying to set up Windows Live Mail (WLM) to work with Mercury I (Mercury 4.72 running under Windows XP SP3).  When I try to connect to Mercury I, I receive the following message from WLM:

Your IMAP command could not be sent to the server, due to non-network errors. This could, for example, indicate a lack of memory on your system.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Configuration:

   Account: AccountName

   Server: myserver.com

   User name: AccountName

   Protocol: IMAP

   Port: 993

   Secure(SSL): 1

   Code: 800ccc0e

Looking at the IMAP session log, I am not seeing any connection attempts for the account which has been set up to use SSL.  I am, however, seeing failed login attempts from accounts that have not been set up to use SSL, as might be expected.

In the IMAP general logging file, I see many identical pairs of lines showing:

Connection from 192.168.1.104, Wed Jun 08 05:11:19 2011
[Not-logged-in] at 192.168.1.104: 0 sec. elapsed, connection closed Wed Jun 08 05:11:19 2011

I have briefly turned off Windows Firewall on both the client (Win7) and server (WinXP) machines, but this makes no difference.

Given that I am not seeing any connection attempts for the account set up for SSL, I have wondered whether there might be a router firewall problem.  However, I have another account, set up on the same client machine, to access an external IMAP4 server (not Mercury), which is using port 993 and this works correctly.

At the moment, I have run out of ideas for solving this problem.  Could it be that Windows Live Mail won't work with Mercury 4.72?  I have seen a reference somewhere that WLM can't use TLS.

[Edited] On second thoughts, maybe the account that is successfully using SSL with port 993 to the external server is not proving the whole SSL/993 issue, given that my Mercury server needs to see incoming SSL connections, which is not an issue with the external server.  My  router situation is not wholly straightforward.  I use two routers with a LAN port of each connected together, so they are on the same sub-net.  Router A (LinkSys WRT54GL running DD-WRT) is where the Internet connection connects to its WAN port.  I have port-forwarded port 993 on Router A to the LAN address of the machine that is running the WLM client.  However, this client machine is connected to a LAN port on Router B (LinkSys WRT54GL running stock firmware) and I have not set up any port forwarding in Router B.  Maybe this is wrong.

Thank you

Correct however I am testing WLM with Mercury/32 v4.73 that does support port 993 direct SSL connections and it works just fine.  Pretty slow and a bit buggy but WLM works.  Does MercuryI v4.72 say it supports direct SSL on port 993?

Thank you, Thomas.  What I was doing was trying to test SSL/TLS, which I haven't used before, with a view to accessing my network, including Mercury, from a Xoom tablet that I have just acquired.  Previously, I have always used a VPN for external access, so the travelling computer just became part of my LAN.  I will first try the tablet using K9 as the mail client ... it seems to have quite a good reputation.  However, unless I allow plain logins in addition to SSL/TLS, I am going to have to solve the issue with WLM, so that I can use the clients on my home LAN using SSL/TLS as well.  I should probably do the Mercury 4.73 update anyway.

Maybe WLN is not the best client, though I quite like it from a clean appearance  point of view.  I have never had much success with Thunderbird .... you may possibly recall that I have an issue with empty message bodies that I have never been able to solve.  I presume that Pegasus would work well with Mercury in a SSL/TLS environment, but I personally don't like its GUI a all.

When you say that the WLM-Mercury connection works with 4.73, do you know whether the source of slowness/bugginess is WLM or Mercury, or a combination in some way?

WLM is a dog from my point of view when running on my WinXP setup.  I have it installed here for testing against Mercury, GMail and my IMAP4 host at Bayarea.net and it's just about the slowest e-mail client I have working with any type of mail account.  I find it a lot worse than either Outlook 2002 or OE.

This has nothing to do with Mercury at all.  FWIW, I also find it crashes once in awhile when working with GMail.

Yes, I agree.  I tried WLM on XP and very quickly gave up on it.  It seems to work pretty smoothly on Win 7 and I have had virtually no issue with it to this point.  I think I am going to give Pegaus another go ... for the third time, as I presume that it will work well with Mercury.  I am hesitant at this point to go back to Thunderbird as, whenever there was an update, I hoped that my empty message body problem would be solved, but this never happened.  from my recollection, I think that this was normaly when a message was sent to me from Outlook .... though this is a while ago now, so I am not certain.
