Recipient unknown - processing failed deliveries and generating notifiication

To all,

Thank you so much for all of your help! I think that was finally the last key to the puzzle, these last three posts. I am now underway and will hopefully leave this alone to function properly from now on! If I have anything further, I will be sure to post. Thank you all once again!

Hello all.

I am in the midst of using this server for my home use, and cannot seem to get passed this problem. I have been using the server just fine for 5-6 months now, but whenever I try to send to one specific address, I get hung-up.

Sandy.cohen1@domain.com

Now, I have the following checked:

"Auto recognize "first.lastname" address forms

"Auto recognize "initial.lastname" address forms

"Recognize variants using either periods or underscores"

"Allow the use of '+' forms in addresses"

"Suppress validation of "From" field when processing mail"

"Accept mail from invalid local addresses"

Now, my only question is, whenever I send this woman an email (her domain is the same as mine), she is not on the server and is just a normal recipient who happens to use the same ISP as me. Whenever I send her an email from my account through Mercury, Core Process reads:

Wed 15, 16:45:00: Job MG000001: from tbird151@xxxx.xxx (local)

*Recipient sandy.cohen1@xxxx.xxx unknown

Wed 15, 16:45:00: Job MG000001: Processing failed deliveries and generating notifications

Wed 15, 16:45:11: Job MG000003: from < > (local)

To: tbird151 (local ) -OK

Wed 15: 16:45:11: Job MG000002: from postmaster@xxxx.xxx (local)

To: Admin (local) -OK

What can I do to allow any and all emails to go out through Mercury?

You are doing it wrong, and using an externally hosted domain as your local domain

You should use local. xyzdomain.com and have an alias list for your local users pointing abc@xyzdomain.com to abc@local.xyzdomain.com .

That

way any mail from local to local will not be routed to the 'real' MX

for the domain, but local to external abc@xyzdomain.com will be.

You are doing it wrong, and using an externally hosted domain as your local domain

You should use local. xyzdomain.com and have an alias list for your local users pointing abc@xyzdomain.com to abc@local.xyzdomain.com .
That way any mail from local to local will not be routed to the 'real' MX for the domain, but local to external abc@xyzdomain.com will be.

Thank you for your quick response!

So now what I've done, is I've created an alias tbird151@local.domain.com and pointed it to tbird151@domain.com

Additionally, I've gone into Outlook and changed the email address to tbird151@local.domain.com, continuing to use 192.168.1.5 as the incoming/outgoing server addresses, pointed back at the computer which Mercury is designated to. However, I still recieve the same message when I send an email from, what is now, tbird151@local.domain.com to tim78@domain.com

Why is this error still persistant?

Thank you for your quick response!

So now what I've done, is I've created an alias tbird151@local.domain.com and pointed it to tbird151@domain.com

Additionally, I've gone into Outlook and changed the email address to tbird151@local.domain.com, continuing to use 192.168.1.5 as the incoming/outgoing server addresses, pointed back at the computer which Mercury is designated to. Please have a look at Core configuration / Local domains and make sure it contains local.domain.com but not domain.com. Restart Mercury after changing this.

The alias should point from tbird151@domain.com to tbird151@local.domain.com, not the other way around (you want to direct certain proper domain addresses to the local mail server, not the other way around).

The sender address in Outlook will still need to contain the public domain name if you want to be able to communicate outside of your LAN.

Again, thank you both for your help.

As configured, I have the alias (tbird151@local.domain.com) with the real world as (tbird151@domain.com). I have two local domains in Configuration\local domains: local.domain.com/domain and local.domain.com/domain.com (local host/internet server respectively). Within Outlook, I have left the email address as tbird151@domain.com and the IP the same as mentioned above.

I have tried making the alias (tbird151@domain.com) and the real world as (tbird151@local.domain.com) but still have the same problem. Anyone outside of my LAN who happens to have the same ever-popular ending domain name (aol, gmail, etc.) will be bounced because I assume Mercury does not want to allow emails outbound since they are not registered as local.

If you have any more advise, please, I'm all ears. Thank you both, again, for all of your help. I hope to hear from you soon!

I think my problem is that, once I change things in Config\local domains, to read local.domain.com/domain and local.domain.com/domain.com, and then add an alias, I'm not sure how to impliment it to work. By creating an alias, yet leaving Outlook the same, I'm not sure how the emails get sent out to the same domain as mine, and are accepted.

ex:

tbird151@hotmail.com (outlook) sending to chris@hotmail.com (destination)

Within Mercury Config\local domains - local.hotmail.com/hotmail & local.hotmail.com/hotmail.com (local host/internet server respectively), and alias tbird151@hotmail.com with real address tbird151@local.hotmail.com, whenever I sent an email from Outlook to the recipient with the same ending domain, it still bounces back. Is there another setting that I have to enable or am I just to hardheaded to realize what I'm doing wrong?

Thank you again for any help!

Hi - I'm sorry to see that you are still having trouble with this. For a home LAN, with a limited number of stable users, this should be fairly straightforward. Home LAN use of Mercury is also my situation.

From what you have said, I presume that you are using the MercuryS SMTP server, to collect your mail from your various contacts. So, they would be sending mail to you as (say) mainuser@yourdomain.com. Others in your home will have been allocated other usernames with the same yourdomain.com domain name. I presume that you have registered your domain name and it's associated with an IP address through DNS. If you are using an ISP which allocates dynamic IP addresses, there are other issues that I won't get into, unless this is needed.

As an example, in my case, I have several users, which Mercury knows about through Configuration/Manage local users ... For the Mercury SMTP server to know how to deal with incoming mail for these users, I define this in Configuration/Aliases .... Therefore, as an example, there is an alias set up that directs mail addressed to Microsoft-Commercial@mydomain.com to the user "Gordon" (me). There is no need to add the local domain name to the local user.

Your domain name needs to be set in Configuration/Core Module as the "Interent name for this system".

I have assumed that your are using the Mercury SMTP server. If you are not and your mail comes to accounts at your ISP, the set up is even easier. In that case you will need to use the MercuryD Distributing POP3 client, to "POP" your mail from your ISP's POP3 server to Mercury. The set-up in Configuraton/MercuryD is very simple. In my case, I have three principal accounts with my ISP and these are associated with three local usernames through the MercuryD set-up screen. If you are using MercuryD and also send your mail, using your ISP's SMTP server (via MercuryC relay client), I don't think that you even need a valid domain name to put in the Merciury core module. So far as I know, it can be anything, in this case.

You can use both MercuryD and MercuryS if you have some mail addressed to your own domain and some to a domain defined by your ISP.

I may be telling you some obvious things that you already know. However, I don't know, given the discussion in this thread so far.
The problem is that you still have hotmail.com listed in your 'Local Domains' so when Mercury Core processes a message with this domain, it will attempt to deliver it locally.

If the user does not exist locally you will get a 'user unknown' error and the mail discarded.

You need to remove it and use something unique.

Thank you all for your responses. At this point, I've exhausted all possible options and am completely in the dark. My problem now, I can send to the same domain externally, but messages coming in are not delivered to my mailbox. I am going to post all relevant config's with regards to my domain. Please help me correct them as needed; I will be extremely greatful!

Config\core modulw

Internet name for this system: hotmail.com

Local domains: local.hotmail.com / hotmail (local host or server/internet name respectively)

Config\alias

  Alias: tbird151@local.hotmail.com

  Real address: tbird151@hotmail.com

Config\MercD

  POP3 Account Info

    POP3 Host: incoming.hotmail.com

    Username: XXXX

    Password: XXXX

    Local user: tbird151@local.hotmail.com

At this point, like I said, I am able to send out to recipients with the same domain, but whenever I get an email in, it either says 1 non-local message ignored, or it goes through because I changed an option or two, and then it is delivered but somewhere else, never to my inbox in Outlook.

Within Outlook, I have the config setup normally, tbird151@hotmail.com, password, IP to the server PC with Mercury on it...but I still seem to be hitting a snag.

Please let me know what I am doing wrong, I'm 4 days into this project and my head is starting to spin! Thank you again for all of your help!

I'm afraid you are basically down to just two options:

1. Buy the domain hotmail.com from Microsoft for a few billion dollars

2. Start using some other domain name in Mercury

If you use MercuryD and MercuryC to communicate with the Internet you can do it without owning a proper domain. If so just call it something simple, like iceman or mercury, and change the settings like this:

Config\core module

Internet name for this system: mercury

  Local domains: mercury mercury

Config\alias

  Alias: tbird151@hotmail.com

Real address: tbird151@mercury (or just tbird151)

Remember that you are aliasing the real Hotmail address to instead be delivered to your local server, not the other way around!

I'm afraid you are basically down to just two options:

1. Buy the domain hotmail.com from Microsoft for a few billion dollars

2. Start using some other domain name in Mercury

If you use MercuryD and MercuryC to communicate with the Internet you can do it without owning a proper domain. This is still the wrong way round - your 'real' address on the server is tbird151@local.hotmail.com. The alias is the address you need to intercept to go to your 'real' address. But this isn't as important as below:
Config\MercD

  POP3 Account Info

    POP3 Host: incoming.hotmail.com

    Username: XXXX

    Password: XXXX

    Local user: tbird151@local.hotmail.com
A local user is just the username you have set up - hopefully tbird151 in your case. Don't use an email address here or the mail will just be discarded.

NOT TRUE! And in fact I strongly recommend that everyone use a full local domain SMTP e-mail address here to ensure the mail is fully processed by Mercury core and other daemons instead of being delivered directly by MercuryD to the local user account. The default user though should be the username of the user assigned as postmaster to ensure delivery in case of a non-match.
