No messages visible in Queue, but they get sent

The problem was caused by IErenderer being enabled.

I disabled it and pasted into the program dir: Bearhtml.dll 04/05/2011

It now appears as though I have a fully functional PM.

Win7
PM v4.61

New install onto new laptop.
Cut the empty admin folder, and PMAIL.USR file, and pasted to a temp dir.
Copied my old admin folder and PMAIL.USR file, and pasted them into the MAIL folder.

Started PM for the first time, and everything was there, exactly as before.

wrote a test email to myself - sent it - the storage folder option displayed - chose the folder.

Normally the message would instantly appear in the Queue, but it was empty.

Closed PM, and the warning dialogue appeared - chose Send & Close.

Re-launched PM - the test mail arrived - but the same problem with Queue.

Any ideas anybody?

v4.61 installs by default into different paths than did previous versions. I suspect that paths contained in the configuration files located in the admin folder are in conflict with the new install. To check this use a text editor to open the pmail.ini file located in the admin folder. Do a text search for "mailbox" and compare the paths in the "Working home mailbox location" line and the "New mailbox location" line with the actual path were the admin mailbox folder resides. If they are different I suggest creating new pmail.ini and state.pmj files (state.pmj may contain a path to the queue folder). This will require reconfiguring Pegasus Mail but it helps to insure no other issues came over from the previous install. To create new files close Pegasus Mail, rename the two files, start Pegasus Mail, reconfigure. The new files will be created when Pegasus is started as the admin mail user. You can view/print the renamed pmail.ini file with a text editor for reference in helping with the configuration.

If the mailbox paths in pmail.ini and the queue path in state.pmj are correct then get back to us as there is something else going on.

Note: there may not be a queue path in state.pmj. I know there is when a UDG (User Defined Gateway) is configured but I am not sure that there is one otherwise.

Backup the admin mailbox folder before starting just to be safe.

Thanks for that advice, but there must be another config file.

I renamed pmail.ini and state.pmj.
There were incorrect paths in both.

Launched PM and reconfigured.
same problem.

I examined both of the new files.
pmail.ini is now tiny, so it was good to create a new one.

What I found really interesting is that the new pmj file has a queue path based on my old pc setup.!
Hence why I believe that there must be another file with outdated info, because PM config, got that path from somewhere, and pasted it into state.pmj.

It looks like your former install on another OS and drive was non standard and not the default location. That may have worked but it will not now on win7. Install to c:\pmail and then run PCONFIG if necessary. With win7 never install or try to use any program files location.

There are a number of files containing paths and queue information and both the pmail.cfg and the pmail.ini from another old setup should not be used or restored. Only data, messages, folders, address books etc, but not configuration files should be copied to correct locations in the new install on the win7 system.

PM is installed to C:pmail

I can't find in the admin folder, any other config type files with the D:path being stated.

pmail.cfg, is in the program dir, so will have been clean installed.

Maybe I could do a search for docs containing the path.

hmmmmm... that should work.

I'll try it

Win7 search doesn't seem to search in all files.

I've searched for text that i've actually copied from a file, yet the results list remains empty.

Can anybody list the files that might contain the outdated path, or at very least, indicate what the file extensions will be.

The offending file must surely be in the admin dir cos that was the folder I copied and pasted

Just tried editing the state.pmj file.
The next launch and close of PM caused the state file to create a 2nd Queue path.

[QMAN]
QueueC:\PMail\MAIL\admin=893,0,1359,239
QueueD:\Program Files\PMail\MAIL\admin=890,0,1344,239

I'll delete the QueueC: line, until we find the file that is creating QueueD: path

I think I've figured out win7 search.

You have to go to control panel, and search on options, from the list choose indexing.

then choose advanced, and the tab file extensions.

Here I added all the file extensions in Admin, and for each clicked the option to search the file contents.

windows then indexes all the data in the files in admin, making it available for searches.

At least, that's what i reckon should be the case. I can't test it until it has finished indexing, so it's a job for tomorrow.

Your search and index change may or may not make any difference because only part of the trouble is in or under \mail or pmail\mail\admin location. The main problem is in pmail\programs\pmail.cfg file and you need to run PCONFIG to change that and PCONFIG is a 16bit application so you must run it on a 32 bit machine or else if using win7-64 download and run DosBox and then PCONFIG.

You could try delete of pmail.cfg while winpm-32 is closed and then restart and follow the prompts. The file pmail.cfg is created and is not part of the distribution or the installer archive.

When setting up a new win7 machine one does *not* want the pmail.cfg file or any pmail.ini from the old system and configuration to be copied to the new install.

Run the installer on a clean machine and drive but do not copy over old stuff from other machine first. Only copy old data as needed and only after a clean install on the win7 machine and to the default c:\pmail location. If the installer exe "sees" or finds any old cofiguation and data there is trouble like you are having currently.

To do a new complete full install check to make sure all instances of winpm-32 are closed. Compress any and all old information or files related to Pegasus Mail into an archive file like .zip or .7z to "hide" it from installer. Then run the installer exe and accept the default c:\pmail location. Then reenter information according to the prompts and choices you will be presented. Then after you have tested and have program running successfully and can download and send email you can shut down winpm-32 and then begin to restore old mail box data and address book information only, no configuration data from old machine.

Yes, I think you are right - a fresh install is the way to go (my pc is win7 64bit - ultimately with PM running under 64bit ubuntu/wine).

As for the offending file in admin.... search identified desktop.pm0

containing just 1 line:

0:D:\Program Files\PMail\MAIL\admin

Whether this is creating a prob.... I don't know.

I think that what this shows is that the filing system would benefit from a sub-folder in admin, where identity, and config data, could be stored.

This would still allow all data to be backed up, but would facilitate data transfer to new pc's.

However, until that happens..... is there a definitive list of file extensions that should be copied into admin, after a clean install?

NOTE:- As a matter of interest, in fact desktop.pm0 was the offending file.

I've just edited it to the correct path, and queue now works.

Why would you do this? After all Pegasus Mail is a native Windows application and now it's running on a Windows emulator on a -nix OS which itself runs on a Windows OS? Seriously, this is already creating troubles where there don't need to be any. For a list of file extensions go to Han's page.

I have my own list but Han has on his site a complete listing of all the files and their functions.

http://www.vandenbogaerde.net/pegasusmail/han_lkfr.htm

Basically you only want to restore the messages folders file pairs and the file pairs for the address book and any new mail raw .cnm files only and may want to view information to help recreate settings in the *.pnd files on the old install. I always save a copy of the old pmail.ini file for reference but don't use the old file, just recreate everything under Tools, Options menu and Tools, Internet options.

Yes i did have a concern with wine but Thomas R. Stephenson is not online. Last active: 24 Jun 2011, 19:19 Thomas R. Stephenson clarified that for me.

However, I believe you are incorrect when you say that ubuntu runs under win7.

It can do; and my first install was like this, but apparently that is just a trial mode, to allow easy uninstall.

I did uninstall ubuntu, and did a full install, which partitions the hard disk to create its own file system, plus a dual boot.

Win7 can't see ubuntu files, but ubuntu can see win7 files ie. data swapping must be done using ubuntu, and this does work.

As for why I decided to move over to ubuntu...... this was pressure from microsoft's commercial strategy.
They have disabled language pack downloads in their preinstalled versions...... if you want a pc in your own language, you need to pay the same money again, that you paid for a new pc including the os!!!

Personally I believe this could even break european laws.

Having begun my computing life with an original IBM PC, all my tech lang has been acquired in English - all my tech interaction (eg. here) is in English - references to specific actions and commands etc. are in English (yet are incompatible with French).

Learning a new OS, made worse with 64bit, is anyway a mountain to be climbed......... the last thing you need is to be taking mission critical decisions, in a fog of understanding.

So I had to decide.... do I learn a new os AND a new tech lang, or, do I learn a new os in my own tech lang (and the primary tech lang for most technology).

The decision was to work with ubuntu, to see if it could replace windows,

I have found some issues, but so far they have all been fixable.
The main issue has been PM - all my emails and contacts, and its self learning spam filter.

The PC is so fast that I cannot imagine a major speed issue with the emulator, so I'm gonna try it.

But imagine the gains, if I can move fully to ubuntu.
no more worries about the os, or the lack of install disks.......... just save you're data, and if the hard disk fails, so what..... just download the os and re-install.

Never to have to worry again about an increasingly creaky patch ridden os that really should be reinstalled but can't be.

Ubuntu sounds like Utopia, if it can deliver.

And if Wine can deliver, then all the better, cos I then don't need to use a different email package.

The main issue has been PM - all my emails and contacts, and its self learning spam filter.</p><p>The PC is so fast that I cannot imagine a major speed issue with the emulator, so I'm gonna try it.</p><p>But imagine the gains, if I can move fully to ubuntu. no more worries about the os, or the lack of install disks.......... just save you're data, and if the hard disk fails, so what..... just download the os and re-install.</p><p>Never to have to worry again about an increasingly creaky patch ridden os that really should be reinstalled but can't be.</p><p>Ubuntu sounds like Utopia, if it can deliver.</p><p>And if Wine can deliver, then all the better, cos I then don't need to use a different email package. &nbsp;<img width="19" height="19" border="0" src="http://community.pmail.com/emoticons/emotion-1.gif"></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

Yes... point taken.

What I meant was that I'm currently getting PM to work in Win7, but ultimately intend to run it under ubuntu/wine.

My lack of clarity I'm afraid.

@ Jerry & Michael.... thanks for that confirmation re the file lists.

Hans's list is very good, but, in the nicest possible way, I'm going to make a suggestion (and will email him).

What would be great, would be a marker to denote which files should be added to ADMIN (and another identity if different), from a previous PM, when installing PM afresh.

I do recognise Jerry, that you did outline the sort of files to paste to ADMIN, but that sounds like, only 5 types of file ie. 5 different extensions.

Is that correct.... and if so.....what are the file extensions?

The reason I ask is because, with that exact list, I can do the job quickly and easily without risk of error.
If I wade through Hans's list, studying each file description, I might miss a file type.

Moving/copying mailboxes from an old install to a new install is much more difficult when the path changes which is a common problem now with the transition to new OS's and Pmail versions. A utility that would import an existing mailbox structure into a new install would be very useful. No doubt it would require detailed instructions about what configuration needs to be completed in the new install before doing the import but as it stands now, copying a mailbox to a new install is difficult and not for the novice.

In this case I'd say bringing something over that you don't need or want is the greater danger and other files nor belonging to or created by winpm-32 but stored in locations in or under \mail and below are a more serious problem in some cases.

The main things you need to copy over are the messages folders *.pmm and *.pmi pairs and also any unfiltered new mail messages *.cnm files to have all your mail. Then you need the address book file pairs to have your address book information. Additionally you may want any .pml distribution list files.

You may, optionally, want your old winpmfua.pm recently used addresses. With rules files and several other things it is better to recreate them and reenter the data and any current paths as almost all rules contain path information as well as folder id information than may or may not be the same now on the new machine. It is good to view the old machine files just for information to assist in creation of the new machine files via the GUI. In dealing with win7-64 even the .fff files from old machine are seldom usable on the new machine and paths and even executable names are often different with 64bit version of the same applications.

Where many problems come in is if you had files you stored below \mail and below that you want and need and want to have included in your routine backup routines. Those are separate matter and only serve to inflate the contents of c:\pmail and below needlessly. At no time has winpmail ever stored anything in Desktop and Settings or ever stored or installed anything into any Program Files location or below. All winpm-32 contents are stored in c:\pmail and below and there are only a couple of registry entries even used by Pegasus Mail.

There is no "wizard" type application to move an old install and contents to a new machine. There is no check list or marked set of files to copy in existence that I am aware of. If there was one in the past I would bet it won't work correctly now with win7-64 systems. It is not winpm-32 that has changed, it is Windows 7. What worked fine for many vesions and many OS's up through XP is now very different and there is little choice except to do as Win7 wants you to do<G>.

Here are the admin files.
Where there are large numbers of same extension, but all being similar in nature, only the qty. is listed and an example filename.
Where files have same extension, but are clearly different - these are all listed.

The top group appear (by their description) to be the sort of files you would want to carry forward
Note: white-m.pm is placed here cos i guess it is whitelist addresses that are listed

the middle group of 4 files - I can't discern anything from the description

The bottom group appear to be files that self create, so are un-needed.

Can anybody put me right on this?

Ace,

Jerry gave you good advice. This process is not an exact science. Everyone uses Pegasus Mail a little differently. Some folks use content control some don't, same with spamhalter, distribution lists, multiple address books, white lists, etc. This makes determining which files need to come over unique to each user. You have done a great job identifying the purpose of the files now you need to decide which files are important to you. The more of them you can recreate from scratch the safer you are. First get Pegasus Mail fully configured in the new install then compare the files in the newly created mailbox folder with your list. Look at the missing ones to decide whether they might be important. If in doubt leave them out, you can always copy one in later if you identify a specific need. Next, consider whether you need the old address books, distribution lists, white lists and bring those over. Rename any files of the same name first just in case you need to restore them. Test often to make it easier to identify a potential problem file.
I have posted your list below and used strikethrough to indicate the files I would not bring over. Many of the files in the Pegasus mailbox folders can be viewed with a text editor so if you can't figure out what one is try viewing it to see if you can get a clue. Also check date stamps and forget about any unknown files that have a really old date stamp.
