The German mail converter I used is free.   Here's a site in English.

Hi,

Possibly switching from outlook express to pegasus.  have a couple of concerns.  I am a simple user, just basically want to recieve/send and keep and organize emails.

1.  Can Pegasus import Outlook Express mail and address book?
I did read the FAQ but too technical for me, do i have to download a converter somewhere the link in the FAQ post went to a site in german so didn't know where to go, any alternative instructions?

2.  Does Pegasus allow message rules, e.g. moves mail into a certain folder(s) depending on who it is from?

3.  Does Pegasus have the same option as Outlook Express does as far as "this server requires secure connection (SSL)" goes for incoming and outgoing mail?

Thank you.

Yes, For the Outlook Express folders try DbxConv. This is a utility which is designed to convert Mail (not news) folders from Outlook Express DBX folders to standard MBX files importable by almost any mail program.  Pegasus Mail can read these *.MBX files directly, you simply point at the directory containing the MBX files using the "Add mailbox to list". http://people.freenet.de/ukrebs/dbxconv.html

For the Outlook folder there is a utility called PM2MSN32.exe from Martin Ireland that can convert the Outlook folders to Pegasus Mail message files.   PM2MSM32 is a specialized 32bit Mapi client that interfaces directly with Microsoft MsExchange/Outlook (or any other Mapi mail server).  It extracts the content of the InBox to individual text files that can be imported to other mail systems such as Pegasus Mail.  In the case of Pegasus Mail it puts CNM files into the new mail directory and then you can put these into a separate folder.  http://www3.telus.net/public/irelam/

For Eudora or Netscape MBX type folders you can use "Add mailbox to list to point at the directory containing the *.MBX files.  You can also use Mail System Converter to convert to and from a these and a few other mail programs. http://www.interguru.com/mailconv.htm or the latest version is always available from http://www.dragon-it.co.uk/pegasus.htm

And finally if cost is not a problem here are a couple of commercial programs to do this  type of conversion.

Yes, you can also set an identity on a folder to make the replies and forwards use the same address.

Yes, Pegasus Mail supports both SSL and TLS.

Check out Han's webpage of useful information for Pegasus mail.  There is a section about conversions down near the bottom.  http://www.vandenbogaerde.net/pegasusmail/han_lkpg.htm
2.  Does Pegasus allow message rules, e.g. moves mail into a certain folder(s) depending on who it is from?
Yes.  Pegasus Mail has powerful mail filtering capabilities.
3.  Does Pegasus have the same option as Outlook Express does as far as "this server requires secure connection (SSL)" goes for incoming and outgoing mail?
Yes.  Receiving hosts and sending hosts are configured separately in Pegasus with SSL connect being an option on both.

Note: After installing Pegasus Mail it will be important to upgrade two components that provide HTML rendering.  They are IERenderer and BearHTML.

IERenderer can be downloaded from http://community.pmail.com/files/folders/community_add-ons_for_pegasus_mail/entry24145.aspx.  Extract the files to a temporary location and run the executable file (ierenderer.exe).  Make sure Pegasus Mail is closed when you do this.

BearHTML can be downloaded from http://community.pmail.com/files/folders/pegadd/entry28839.aspx.  Extract the files to the Pegasus Mail program folder overwriting the existing files.  Make sure Pegasus Mail is closed when you do this.

Note 2:  Pegasus Mail has an excellent help file and manual.  The manual is a pdf file named manual.pdf (creative name don't you think?).  You will find it in the Pegasus Mail program folder (default is C:\pmail\Programs).  The manual precedes IERenderer so information on IERenderer can accessed through its help file.  Access IERenderer's menu by clicking it's icon on the right end of the main toolbar (the Pegasus superimposed over the Internet Explorer logo).

Note 3:  You can test Pegasus Mail without affecting your OE.  In Pegasus Mail, the configuration of the receiving host has an option called  "Delete mail from host once it has been successfully retrieved".  Normally this would be enabled but if you disable it then Pegasus Mail won't delete the mail on the host, leaving it available for OE.  For this to work you will need to coordinate running Pegasus and allowing it to retrieve messages before allowing OE to retrieve and delete them (assuming OE is deleting them and not just retrieving unread messages).  Sending replies is a different story.  Replies of importance will need to be done on OE if you keep copies, at least until you are ready to commit to Pegasus Mail.

in reference to question #1 the link you give for getting dbxconv takes you to a german site.  I found it easier to go to www.dbxconv.com.  Product costs $69 seems there would a free way to import mail from OE.  Is there any other alternative?
