Interface display problems

"There are a lot more important reasons for not driving high speed cars, a lot more important ones ..."

But of course there are. But where's the fun then? Any other car can take you from A to B. The same applies to email clients I think: at the end of the day all of them will send and receive emails. Still, only few are prefered by majority of people. That's why I'm hoping you're not going to limit my "Ferrari" to 120km/h, being it because of the OS or any other reason.

"I wish I had never introduced it in the first place". This brings me memories of people that made the first computers (not that I knew them personally), who thought something like "256kb of RAM should be enough for ever from now on", or "let's have the year saved as 85, and not 1985, to save memory space. And computers won't have such a big impact on people anyway". My point is: what might look as a mistake or a bad thing at the start, may turn out to being actually prefered by end-users. I'm sure you can think of many other examples yourself.

And when you think it all started with the Windows 7 - since I've installed it in my computer I mean. Until then I had no problems with Pegasus Mail under XP, as I said. But I'm sure that I will find a solution for the toolbar problem, and everything will return to normal. Keep up the good work!

All the best,

Hamilton

I have

been using Pegasus Mail for years now, and I am currently using the

version 4.41. I have tried updating to latest version 4.61, but

when the program starts and I click to view a message from the Main

folder (old messages), the programs closes instantly, without any

warning. Therefore I have to stick to versio 4.41.

However,

while it used to work without an issue for a long time, a few

months ago I have upgraded from Windows XP to 7 Ultimate. Since

then, it happens that sometimes (well... most of the times), after

I restart the computer and Pegasus Mail, the interface is

incomplete, and by that I mean the main toolbar. What I do to fix

it is changing from let's say "Graphics only" to "Text only", or

"Graphics and text", and restart te program. Sometimes it works

from the first try, but sometimes it takes 10-20 restarts for the

toolbar to be displayed properly, i.e. the buttons on

it.

I have

checked the Windows drivers, but everything looks all right there.

Do you have any suggestion? I have searched on Google for simillar

problems other users have experienced and reported, but I couldn't

find any.

Thank

you.

Two links for you: v4.61 and IE 9; hardware acceleration and graphics.

Hi there, and thanks for your quick reply. I already have IE9 (Windows 7 Ultimate by default). I have tried using version 4.61, but as I explained in my previous post, after install (update), when trying to view emails stored in Main Folder, Pegasus mail closes instantly, with no error message. I've read the posts under your last link, in regards to hardware acceleration. My video card NVIDIA GeForce GO 6150 apparently doesn't have the option mentioned there... or at least I can't find it. However, as I'm assuming the problems come from the video card, I've done some changes in the setting fr the video card, and will see if there's any good news.

Kind regards,

Hamilton

That's why I pointed you to a thread for solving this issue!

Hi Michael,

Again, thanks for your help. I've tried different settings for the video card, and so far it seems that the problem it's solved in relation to showing the toolbar. However, do you have any idea of what could cause the program (version 4.61) to close down when trying to view old email messages? I tried to update it again just now, but still same things happens, so I need to revert to version 1.41.

Kind regards,

Hamilton

Because IE 9 broke the new IERenderer which is why I pointed you to the thread about IE 9 would point you to an update of IERenderer which solves this issue if installed after updating Pegasus Mail.

Oh, OK, I guess that because I was looking after solving the interface problem, I overlooked that part with IERenderer. Will try that now, and thanks again. Hamilton

2 min. later edit: Hey, what do you know? It works like a charm. Thank you very much for your time, Michael.

Later edit: not so "charming" after all... it seems to be very unstable now, with the new version. Plus the trouble with switching for different users (I've learned how to customize the toolbar and add a "Switch user" button)... so I had to revert to version 4.41, with the same interface problems as it seems. Too bad after all this years to see Pegasus Mail stumbling. Hopefully a more stable, "user switch-eable" version will be released soon.

Pegasus Mail has removed the "switch user" since it caused all sorts of instability problems and can in fact cause loss of mail.  You are using a kludge that is non-supported so please do not call Pegasus Mail stumbling when you are trying to use a 'hack' that is known to cause major problems. There are multiple way to easily run the program as different users.

The best way to perform this function now is to run separate instances of Pegasus Mail.

1.  Right click on the WinPMail shortcut and select "Properties".

2.  Select the "Shortcut" tab.

3.  Edit the "Target line" to add the commandline option.

A commandline option will generally look like the following:

c:\pmail\winpm-32.exe -i thomas -ms

or when using long directory names

"c:\Program Files\pmail\winpm-32.exe" -i thomas -ms

You create a shortcut for each user you use quite often and one without the -I <username>.  Now all you have to do is hit the proper shortcut to have any user you want opened and running.

You can also just use "Add mailbox to list" to point at these other accounts and then associate an identity with each folder in the accounts so that forwards and replies will come from the correct user.

Hi Thomas,

You may call it a "hack", but I found the information right there, in the Pegasus Mail documentation, and by that I mean the file called "bpanel.txt" found in the Recource folder. Now I am only assuming of course that the developers were those who wrote the information provided in that file. And for obvious reasons for me and many other users who asked for the "switch user" option, I would not call this a "hack", but rather an "improvement". The other options you kindly mentioned in your post for working around this "problem" are somehow cumbersome, not only for me, but apparently for other people too, as I've noticed.

I certainly did not mean to insult the developers or the program itself, which continues to be my preference in terms of email clients, but only to point some shortcomings (as I see it) in the latest version. Which to me proved to be unstable even before I added that tooolbar with the "switch user" option. But again, this is just my oppinion, and this may apply only to my case.

Kind regards,

Hamilton

The code was not removed but but since the function was removed from the menu you are using a unsupported function that could be gone at anytime.  The reason it was removed was that it was found that there is no way that this function could be used without causing crashes that could cause the loss of mail.

In any reports you make of problem make sure you state you are using this unsupported function.

Thomas, as I previously mentioned already, the program proved to be somehow unstable in my case even before I've done any changes to it, i.e. the toolbar. Therefore my problems were not necessarily related to making use of something that is not supported.

Again, by this I'm not saying that Pegasus Mail is not working properly (doing its job, I mean) or that people should stop using it. I really appreciate your work, I really do. Only sometimes the saying "if ain't broken, don't fix it" really proves to be true. In so many years of using version 4.41 I've never experienced any problem with the usage of "Change user" option. And to be honest I'm very happy with this program. The only problem I have at the moment (sometimes) is with the display (or NOT displaying, to be exact) of the toolbar. Which I know it's not because of Pegasus Mail, but because of the new operating system (Windows 7) - some settings or drivers... I'm still trying to figure it out. Otherwise than that, Pegasus Mail is rock solid.

The operating systems have changed over the years. OK. So you have to play by others rule. I understand that. But giving up of some options / functions just to release a new version that is compatible with the new OS... I'm sure you'll find another way around. And I could even risk placing a bet there: that you will do your best to re-introduce the "Change user" option. I don't know, I just feel this way... Otherwise Ferrari should start manufacturing their cars with a speed limit of just 120km/h, just because Police says you can't drive over that speed. If they don't care about this, why would you care about what Microsoft says?[;)]

It's got nothing to with OS changes: Whenever a change user issue came up David Harris used to say (to us beta testers) I wish I had never introduced it in the first place. And given his limited capabilities (time and money wise) he didn't regard it worth the effort of rewriting it anymore after crashes related to this feature became more frequent.
