Pegasus freezes on start-up

This was the log just before Pegasus generated an error. It had been frozen for maybe 5-10 minutes before this.

None of the referenced files seem to exist.

We are running Pegasus 4.61 c/w Mercury on a Novell 5.5 network using Novel Client for Windows 4.83. This works very well.

We

use Citrix for remote access to the network with applications accessed

via Citrix (including Pegasus) running on a Windows 2000 SP4 server. We

have an intermittent problem when using this with Pegasus hanging on

startup on the splashscreen, displaying the message "Locating

Folders....0". Eventually we will get an error message saying

insufficient memory and get dumped out of Pegasus (the server has 16Gb

of RAM and only 3 users so isn't exactly low on memory). At this point all our network

drives will have been disconnected from the session as a result of the Pegasus crash. Our

only solution is to reboot the Windows Server. Sometimes this is

sufficient to allow us to log into Pegasus correctly, other times not.

In the latter case, opening Pegasus on a Windows XP machine, closing it

again may solve the problem. But again, not always. Does anyone have any

ideas what might be happening?

 Many thanks for your help.

Difficult to say without actually debugging the application in your environment. The "insufficient memory" message should presumably be interpreted as that Pegasus is requesting a chunk of memory but is refused by the OS. "Locating Folders...0" indicates some kind of networking problem. If this happens only when running Pegasus in a Citrix session it could be that Citrix isn't fully compatible with the Novell client, but that's of course just speculation.

Another complicating factor could be an antivirus program that intercepts network traffic, but as you don't mention any such software I assume there wasn't any in this case.

Thanks for the suggestions.

While I'd never say anything is 100% compatible, this is the only thing that doesn't work via Citrix. We've had the Citrix/Novell setup for around 10 years now and its proved very stable.

We run ESET NOD32 antivirus on both the Citrix Win2000 server and on all our WinXP desktops. Again can never rule it out as a factor but I'd be surprised that it didn't cause the same issues on the XP boxes.

Is there any way I can debug this problem and provide further information?

Thank you for any help.

Well, it's a process of elimination. We know that it happens only in the Citrix sessions, so Citrix is somehow involved in it. Maybe there is a Citrix forum with posts from people with similar problems running other programs? If you could temporarily close down NOD32 on the server it should tell us if that software has a part in it. If not it might be possible to get more details about what is causing the crash by running Filemon or some other tool like that.

If you are running Citrix, there is an official process to certify applications as compatable with Citrix. There should be someone on the Citrix frums who has done this already. You might also check with the Citrix folk on certification status of Novell network software...

Regrettably, I can't help you much with this, simply because I have no experience at all of Citrix. That said, I would observe that both your windows server (Windows Server 2000!) and NetWare Client (v4.83) are very old now (as is your NetWare server, although I don't believe it is implicated in any of this). My guess would be that there is an incompatibility somewhere between Citrix and the NetWare client, and my first suggestion would be to see what you can upgrade.

As for what Pegasus Mail is doing during startup, well, quite a bit, but nothing that hasn't been proven over 20 years and innumerable versions of NetWare. The most likely scenario is that the drive mapping WinPMail creates (so it can be sure it has a connection to the user's home mailbox directory) is somehow clashing with something the Citrix system is trying to do, or with Windows itself.

Not wanting to deflect the blame here, but I suspect the problem is not actually anything to do with Pegasus Mail per se - the reason you see it in Pegasus Mail but not in other applications will be because Pegasus Mail is probably the only NetWare-aware application you have, and as such, it will tend to expose incompatibilities in the interaction between the two OSes.

Sorry I can't be of more help here.

Cheers!

Firstly, thank you all very much for your replies and for taking time to think about my problem. It's much appreciated.

I've switched ESET NOD32 off but still get the same problem, so I think we can rule that out. By the by I would recommend NOD32 as an AV programme. Very small resource overhead and very reliable.

While never saying never I am thinking it isn't a Citrix/Win2000 compatability issue as Citrix is really just acting as a glorified RDP. Once I've connected to the Win2000 server all its doing its relaying the screen, keyboard and mouse. I am guessing that something in Pegasus doesn't like something in Win2000. Or, more likely, something in Win2000 doesn't like something in Netware and Pegasus is merely the symptom not the cause as David suggests.

David, you are quite right that the Win2000 OS is somewhat old. But apart from the Pegasus glitch it works well and I kind of take the view if it aint broke don't fix it. Not to mention the cost of new hardware required to run the latest Microsoft server offering plus the cost of their software.....I'd love to update Novell though but I have the latest client (the newer Client 2.0 is for Win7 and Vista) and sadly they've stopped updating Netware itself. Perhaps time to look at Open Enterprise Server.

Thanks again for all your suggestions and David, thank you and your team for a fantastic programme.

Best Regards

Duncan

That was a lot of errors, but not necessarily what is causing the problem. We can see that the file C:\PMAIL\Programs\AUTORPLC.PM was read, so the C drive is accessible and the PMAIL\Programs\ directory exists. If the other queried files in fact don't exist then there was no access problem (programs often need to check for the existence of various optional files). If on the other hand an existing file wasn't found then it's definitely something to have a closer look at.

Was this the final part of the log before the freeze?
