Thumb Drive, Pegasus, Error, The Plot Thickens

Copied entire subdirectory over to a different thumb drive (on a good machine away from home)

Came home, plugged in the *COPIED* version; i.e., on the different thumb drive.

Ran Pegasus.

Works fine.

Same thing, apparently, with OpenOffice.Org app.

A friend and Expert in bugs and support has suggested that I use ChkDsk

I'm wondering how much effort I want to put into this.

Obvious solution appears to be

  1. Go to other machine
  2. Make mirror copy of thumb drive
  3. Reformat misbehaving drive
  4. Put stuff back on it
  5. Use it again

I still wonder what is causing this. Zero clue

Pretty obvious to me that this is something in hardware, or some strange-o in the OS

Whatever, I can use Pegasus anywhere now; which is what I've been after for weeks and months.

Someday, most [or all] apps will be like this; where you can run them from your own tiny storage gizmo. I really like this way better

If anyone can help me solve this problem, thanks. Google, Yahoo, and Bing have so far only lead me to circular chases.

Basic symptoms...

  • I Put Pegasus on a USB Thumb Drive
  • Runs fine on computer X
  • Won't run on computer Y

I began to think that perhaps I should copy all the contents of the PMAIL subdirectory from the thumb drive to the hard drive (on computer Y, in my home, the one that fails) just in case I do something stupid and obliterate files.

While Windows (XP) was copying the files, I got this message...

Cannot Copy FOL0734D: The specified network resources or device is no longer available

This is a new one on me. I could not find anything sensible, looking over 20 or 30 close hits from web searches.

In fact,I couldn't find "FOL0734D:" anywhere

The search engine hits on the MicroSoft website were nebulous at best.

Okay, who's got the brains on this one ? (I sure don't)

Specs and details below.

Thanks for any response

_____________________________

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
USB on computer X is drive "E:" (This one works)
USB on computer Y is drive "D:" (This one fails)

On computer X (which works) I believe they are also using windows XP; exactly which edition, no clue.

p.s., I began having this problem, like, by magic, in the past few days.

I believe very similar (exact ?)

behavior is occurring with OpenOffice.Org in another subdirectory on the same thumb drive.

I'll try and copy those files and see if the same thing happens.

NewsFlash update.

As best I can tell, I was able to see that the actual file was named...

FOL0734D.PMM

The copying was being done...

From '

ADMIN' to

'ADMIN'

Just repeated experiment with OpenOffice.Org subdirectory. (Got it from www.PortableApps.com, I think)

Exact same behavior

File name: biblio.dbt  (lower case)

Can't tell the exact folder name on this one

Thanks for any answer that works.

Looks like the thumb drive is not being read.

Could be the drive or the USB port on that machine.
