It's a triad of IP address of the sending system, MAIL FROM and RCPT TO address..

I seem to have a slight issue with Greywall.

I turned it on last night and monitored what was going on.

An email came from an ebay server with the from address of bidnotify@ebay.com

This was blocked by Greywall.

10 minutes later the same email tried to come in.

It came from the same IP Address and same sender.

Greywall blocked it.

A short while later, it tried again from the same IP Address and sender. It was blocked.

As soon as I turned of Greywall the email came in and was delivered to the user.

Any ideas ??

In addition to the information from the logs, do you know what the settings are?  The first settings says how long to "Minimum retry time for unlock in minutes".  If that is set at something like "60" your subsequent messages won't have any impact until 60 minutes have elapsed.

This is a great question, because it highlights the meaning of "Minimum retry time for unlock in minutes".  That is, is that setting keyed from the very first email that arrives from a given address or is that setting effectively reset each time a new email arrives such that it might better be described as "Minimum time between retries for unlock to be effective - in minutes".

It looks like your time period is just barely in excess of 5 minutes.  But you also indicate that there were 3 such blocked emails in your original message and you only displayed the log information for two blocked emails. Hard to really debug this sort of stuff when partial information is provided.  Do you have the entire log?

As far as I can tell, it is from the very first email and is not reset.  So, if I have my retry set at 5 min. and the first retry is at 1 min., the second 2 min. later, and then the third at 3 min., the third retry should be accepted.

Was Mercury32 running during all of this or did you shut it down and restart?  I just want to have a clear picture so I can pass it along to Lukas.

Mercury was running.

Just after that I disabled GreyWall and the email came in OK !

Can you see examples in your log of _any_ email that gets delayed and is then allowed through, or are they all continually blocked by Greywall?  (I wasn't sure from your original post whether this ebay email is the only one doing this or if you just chose that as an example.)

If none are allowed, maybe your config is damaged.

I can see other emails get stopped then allowed later.

So it seems to be working in some ways.

I've passed the information along to the full beta team.  Hopefully Lukas or someone else can shed some light on it and provide some feedback.  I'll let you know although I am off for a short holiday soon so it may wait until I return on Thursday.

Did you see in graywall log (or at Mercury 'system messages' console) some Graywall related errors?

Did you changed 'retry timeout' in last times? unlock time is stored in database with each record. If you have retry time as 60 minutes, then first deivery attempt store unlock time +60 minutes from now in database. This connection cannot be unlocked sooner, even you change minimim retry time now.

Lowered minimum retry time is valid for next new connections only.

Is it not your issue?

Greywall is installed, but not active at the moment.

I plan on playing with this further in the next week or so.
