Pegasus, MAPI & SuperOffice

Glen, after reading this post again: Do I understand correctly that you're simply clicking an email address in SuperOffice for creating a new email message? And do I correctly assume that this option does not provide any further data to Pegasus Mail (called "attachments" in the above log)? Using OpenOffice this appears to work properly ...
Correct, and I notice that in several other programs this appears to work correctly as well. This leads me to believe at least part of the problem is with SuperOffice, but of course they will claim that their software works with other mailers.

Hello:

We have just purchased a CRM software, SuperOffice, and I am in the midst of setting it up for us. It integrates with standard email systems, either Outlook or MAPI compliant mailers. I figure it should work well with Pegasus but I am not having good luck. When I click an email in SuperOffice to compose a message in my mailer, Pegasus is launched but the email address is not placed on the To line. When I set Outlook as the default mailer it seems to work fine. When I click to send an attachment in SuperOffice, which instructs the mailer to send the file out immediately with no additional text, the outgoing message appears to be created properly in Pegasus as it begins to send out a message by SMTP, but then Pegasus crashes. Checking my Mercury logs and the failure message, I see that SuperOffice somewhat mangled the "To:" field:

It would seem SuperOffice is doing something wrong by including the P: before the email address, or is Pegasus getting a command wrong? The P: was not on the To: line when the message was created in Outlook. Why is Pegasus crashing at the end of trying to send the message, instead of just finishing and then displaying the failure? Also, why is the Pegasus not receiving the address when it is sent to it when I want to compose a new message?

I have checked the operation of Pegasus through MAPI in other applications, like WinZip and even Word and Excel... everything seems to work fine, so it would seem like this is a SuperOffice problem. But SuperOffice is working fine with Outlook using MAPI so is Pegasus missing something? Does anyone know of a utility that can log the MAPI commands being sent so we can try and troubleshoot it? And does anyone have any experience using SuperOffice with Pegasus? I still haven't given up on Pegasus for our company even though I am continually asked why I don't use Outlook. SuperOffice could actually compliment Pegasus a bit as it makes up for some of the things lacking, such as a calendar and appointments. But if I can't get this working I don't know if I will have much choice. Thanks in advance for any help!

Create an empty file called mapipm.log in your mailbox directory (see Help => About Pegasus Mail => Info for the path information, I'm not sure whether it's the home or the new mailbox path, though, in most cases they are identical anyway). For getting details about crashes please install the MiniDump extension (and read its ReadMe file for details).

Do you have a file called Mapipm.dll located in your Pegasus Mail executables directory? If not, you will need to download Mapipm.zip from the Pegasus Mail Community diwnloads area:

     MAPIPM: http://community.pmail.com/files/folders/pegadd/entry25482.aspx

You will then need to update your Windows Registry to handle the new Dll. I will wait to hear from you before discussing the registry updating. This is normally done as part of the Pegasus Mail install/updating.

irelam: Yes, the mapipm.dll is in the program folder. MAPI seems to work in most applications, like IrfanView, WinZip & Office2010, but this SuperOffice must be doing something a little different.

I guess the P: in front of the email address could be coming from the tail end of the SMTP: that prefixes it, so either SuperOffice is sending data it shouldn't, or Pegasus is reacting badly to data it doesn't expect. Neither explains why Pegasus should crash at the end of trying to send the message, perhaps Pegasus can't deal with a message failure in the middle of a MapiSendMail command?

I have posted this in case anyone wants to troubleshoot this further, or if another SuperOffice user runs into the same troubles. Over the course of trying to fix the problem, I tried Outlook, which found our Mercury mail server automatically and my username, and just asked me for my mail password. Upon launching, it connected to my mail account by IMAP and all my folders and mail was there! There are some features I miss, but overall I have to admit it is simpler to use, which is not as important for me as it is our users. It breaks my heart: I've been using Pegasus since the mid-90's and I'll continue to use it at home, but at the office I have to go with what works best as a collective whole.

Hello,

The log file shows the problem. The MapiSendMail that SuperOffice is generating contains invalid strings for the recipients as well as the header lines that have been prefixed with SUBJECT, TO, SMTP etc. These lines are actually saved in individual arrays, and so don't need line type descriptors.

There are two ways to solve this. I can write a quick and dirty fix to strip off these prefixes, or we can contact the vendor and have them fix their product. The second solution may take some time, as developer cycles can be protracted.

I will try and get a beta-test by the weekend for you to try out.

Martin

Thanks, Martin... if you write it I will test it out of curiosity and in case any of my users decide to choose to stick with Pegasus instead of Outlook. Based on the SuperOffice add-ins that work with Outlook, my guess is few will stay. I do intend on sending the MAPI logs to the SuperOffice people so they can clean up their commands for other users.

I replaced my mapipm.dll with yours, and it fixed the problem of the P: in front of the To: address, so the test message sent fine! Unfortunately, Pegasus still crashed at the end of the send. Also, for the other problem I posted originally of clicking on an email address to use Pegasus to compose the message, Pegasus still launches, but does not start a new message window with the email address filled in. Here is the mapi log for that transaction:

Thanks, Glen, the dump contains valuable details, now David Harris needs to look into it and possibly talk to Martin Ireland about what they need to do next. BTW (just out of interest): How did you extract the human readable stuff quoted in your post from the (binary) dump?

And another BTW: I notice you're still using Pegasus Mail 4.61: Did you consider updating to the latest version which contains updates for all rendering modules and fixes several crashes (although most probably not this particular one)?

And do I correctly assume that this option does not provide any further data to Pegasus Mail (called "attachments" in the above log)? Using OpenOffice this appears to work properly ...
Also, for the other problem I posted originally of clicking on an email address to use Pegasus to compose the message, Pegasus still launches, but does not start a new message window with the email address filled in. Here is the mapi log for that transaction:

05 October 21:35 MapiSendMail called 05 October 21:35 MAPI for Pegasus Mail 1.7.8 (October 18, 2011) 05 October 21:35 MapiSendMail: recipients supplied 05 October 21:35 PokeHeaders called 05 October 21:35 Recipient starts 05 October 21:35 recipient: SMTP:gjackson@rubbusa.com 05 October 21:35 Recipient: gjackson@rubbusa.com 05 October 21:35 Recipients ends 05 October 21:35 PokeHeaders ends 05 October 21:35 No attachments given 05 October 21:35 DDE done

When I saved the dump file I noticed that the .dmp extension happened to be associated with an application already, so I double-clicked on it and it opened in Visual Studio 2010, with an option to copy the dump message to the clipboard. Funny, I thought I had updated the office Pegasus to the latest version, but apparently I didn't. I'll do that later today since nobody is using it.
