Pegasus has gotten incredibly slow in processing incoming emails

>Internet Services ... should be set to to Always

It seems you got it right.

Thank you.

N.B. No, defragging doesn't make any difference.

I don't know what happened but over the last 5 or 6 months Pegasus Mail has become very slow at processing incoming emails.

I usually get about 300-500 emails a day, mostly spam, and have set up about 30-40 filtering rules to get rid of the spams. Pegasus used to work pretty fast through all this. It would take it about 2-3 minutes to download the emails from my Internet provider's server and then maybe a couple of minutes to process the emails through the filter rules and move them to various folders.

Then a few months ago  it all became much slower. It still takes 2-3 minutes to download the emails, but now the processing takes 30 or more minutes! I can see each email taking 10-20 seconds to be processed.

I had not changed anything, except maybe I upgraded to a newer version of Pegasus.

I have tried upgrading and downgrading to various versions, including the current 4.62 version, with no improvement.

I don't know where the problems are. I tried not using any filter rules but it still is just as slow. I also tried it on various PCs I have (both Win XP and Vista) with no improvement.

Any ideas ?

Go to Tools => Options => Advanced settings and change Load Windows Internet Services ... to Always (if it's set to On demand only) and restart Pegasus Mail.

Thanks for getting back but I tried this months ago already and it did not help then. Just the same, I just tried it now again, and it still doesn't do anything. Still slow....

I wonder if it is winpm-32 or is it download and upload speed being troubled by excessive packet fragmentation or mismatched MTU?

Have you tried with Content Control turned off of with number of bytes to check in each message to much smaller amount? That processing does not begin until after download of email messages. I'm assuming you are using POP3 protocol and not IMAP.

Have you tried creating session log, using -z 32 on command line? That created tcp*.wpm file does have time stamps and so should show if any unusual delays of halt of processing for a certain interval. Be very careful and heed warning about that file and don't copy of send it until the login and password info are removed from the file.

If I understand this problem correctly, it is not download speed over the network that is the problem, rather the time it takes for Pegasus to process the mails after download.

I have a similar problem, specifically with mails containing large attachments (e.g. a 6MByte .wmv file).  The problem appears to be Preview mode.

In my case, just clicking on such a mail in the 'New Mail' folder results in a 20 second wait, quite what for I don't know, because the 100-char email is eventually displayed and the irrelevant attachment is ignored anyway.

With Preview mode disabled, this delay is eliminated.  I could understand this in a mail with embedded images in an HTML setting, but not where the attachment is not rendered on the screen.

I wonder if this is a similar problem to the one by stan Lekach.

In any case, eliminating this [unnecessary] delay would greatly enhance the ability to quickly browse through the mails in the New Mail folder.

Are we talking about the new mail (or a public) folder or any other ("regular") folder here: The latter will always work a lot faster since it doesn't re-parse the whole message any time (due to being indexed) as opposed to the other folders which always start over again.

Now that you mention it, the problem is primarily with mail in the 'New Mail' folder.  Once copied to a regular folder, the delay largely (but not completely) disappears.  So I think you have identified the problem.

Nevertheless, if a file is declared .wmv or .mp3 or .ppt for example, can this section of the email not simply be ignored rather than reparsed.  I assume the size and boundaries of the attachment are easily discovered without heavy-duty reparsing ??

These are typically the attachments which simply by being very large, cause my system to freeze for the best part of 30 - 60 secs.

I have no idea, only David Harris can answer this. But as he is working on a completely new mail storing machine anyway it's unlikely to be the same issue anymore: It'll be modified anyway and we should only revisit it then if there's still a significant delay.

Have you looked at your Windows default printer? For some reason, Pegasus gets very slow when the default printer is off-line or not accessible. This is true even if you are not attempting to print anything.

HTH

My default printer is Bullzip PDF printer. It's a "virtual" printer and always on. But I've also tried it with a real printer and same slow thing...

I have the very same problem.

winpm-32.exe takes often 99% of the CPU time, effectively locking my computer for many seconds.

I doubt it's the same problem unless it applies to exactly the same situation: Did you check your settings on Tools => Options => Advanced settings? Load Windows Internet Services ... should be set to Always (if it's set to On demand only), and restart Pegasus Mail after changing it (as suggested up this thread). When I find PM slowing down too much I defragment my PMAIL folder, using using the free open source program: Defraggler. With it one can defrag a hard drive, single Folder or single File. URL: http://www.piriform.com/defraggler
