Trying to move (share) mailbox on XP

 > > Did you download the MS application I pointed you to in my previous answer?

> Is that really necessary?  I don't need Admin to have access to the mailbox.

Yes if you are not going to be running WinXP as an admin user. Pegasus Mail is not going to be the only WinZP program where the normal non-admin user is going to have to have access to directories created by an admin user.

> Apparently pmail copied the messages when I "moved" the mailbox using Tools->Options->General settings->"Mailbox location".

Yes this will work as long as the file and folder you copied were not admin created files where the non-admin user did not have all right to use.  This is only transferring the home mail directory, the new mail directory location did not change.

> Now I can view the messages, although I haven't been able to delete a message from the inbox and I haven't tried to write or download
> messages as User yet.

Probably can't delete since the non-admin user did not have the delete rights to the files.

> Can I move the mailbox to User's documents folder, or is messing with permissions at the OS level the only way for a limited user to use
> pmail?

No you cannot.  You can move the HOME mail directory to this other location but the NEW mail directory need to stay where it is.  Either change the rights to give the non-admin user the rights of the admin user or change the rights to the directories and files to give the non-admin user read/write/create/etc rights.

While logged in as an admin, use My Computer or

Windows Explorer to navigate to the mailbox folder

(c:\pmail\mail\admin?).  Right click on that folder and select Sharing

and Security.  Select the Security tab then in the top half of that

window select the user for whom you need to change permissions (if not

listed use the Add button to add).  Once that user is selected, tick the

Allow box on the Full Control line.  This will grant full control to

the user who will be using this mailbox.

Note:  If you need the

limited user to be able to manipulate mailboxes (add users for instance)

you need to enable the Full Control permission one folder level higher

(c:\pmail\mail) and replace the permissions for child objects (use the

Advanced button to get to that setting).

I don't see that on my XP system.  Are you thinking of Windows 7?   The only option I saw was to move the folder to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents.

I Tried to move mail to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Pmail, but now I don't see my mail folders in the pmail app.

This is what I did:

  1. Logged in as adminstrator
  2. Ran pmail
  3. Went to Tools->Options->General settings->Mailbox location
  4. Pasted "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Pmail" into the text box.
  5. Checked "Move mailbox contents to new location"
  6. Clicked "Change now"

A DOS window came up and moved my mail files, but now the emails don't appear in Folder view.

It looks like pmail was truncating the mailbox path.
I went to  Tools->Options->General settings->"Mailbox location" and pasted in the path
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Pmail

but when I went back to the General settings window again, the path read
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\DOCUMENT

I manually moved the mailbox up one level, to
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\PMAIL

With that location, the message folders and messages were visible to administrator again, but I couldn't see the messages as a regular user.
Now I've moved the mailbox back to the default location for Admin, and I manually made all the files read/write, but as User I still can't see the messages.

It was probably there but not visible in the space provided.  Had you scrolled across the entry the remainder would have been visible.

OMG!  I never thought of that!

Oh wait, yes I did.

Hey, you wanna hear something funny?  It looks like pmail created C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\DOCUMENT.
It contains several .PM files and a bunch of .pmX files, where X  is in [l,i,m,0,!,r,j], along with basic.dnc, spambust.DAT, and words4.db3.

It would have moved the mailbox to wherever you asked it to.

I assume you are aware also that moving the home mailbox does not move the new mail folder and that the locations of the new mailbox and home mailbox at any given time are shown in Help | About Pegasus Mail | Info.

Really?  Then when I do this:

  1. login as Admin
  2. copy and paste "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Pmail" from the file explorer into the Path textbox in Tools->Options->General settings->Mailbox location
(the text "TTINGS\ALL USERS\DOCUMENTS\PMAIL" is visible in the text box, and I can scroll left to make sure the full text is "C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\DOCUMENTS\PMAIL".)
  3. click the "Change now" button

why does this happen?:

  1. Each time I create a new message folder, two files appear in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\DOCUMENT.  The files are named FOLXXXXX.PMI and FOLXXXXX.PMM, where XXXXX looks a hex number.
  2. Nothing happens in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Pmail.  It's still empty.

The string is probably too long. Test the number of characters it will accept and then construct a directory that suits you.

I don't know of a stated maximum but there seems to be one.

Looks like it tops out at 44 characters if i counted correctly.  Try a directory path within that but revert to the default first.

I'll tell you what, why don't you do it for me.  Pmail's path-length limit seems to be the length of
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Document",
and the Windows XP path needs to start with
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\",
because apparently that's the only folder where XP allows sharing.
So ..... what would you recommend that we add to
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\"
that would make it shorter than
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Document"?

Here's another question:  Maybe Admin doesn't need to use the mailbox at all.
Then the problem is that I downloaded the messages as Admin but I want to use the mailbox as User.
So how about this:  Is there a way to take the default mailbox for Admin and transfer it to User?

Confusion and not sure if it is you or me. WinPMail has never used  Documents and Settings location for anything and would not use a path with spaces in it by default for anything. WinPMail has always conformed to MSDos 8.3 compatible paths and file names it creates.

It sounds to me like what you are actually wanting to do is set up Public Folders and there is a good and extensive section in Help for that.

Are all your Pegasus Mail and folders below actually installed to default c:\pmail location? That has been default and still is default location but XP would let you install to another location whereas that will not work with Vista or newer OS.

Have you eve included in post to forum of your Help, About, Info button display? That is usually step one to unravel any path or install issues. By nature winpm-32 is server type application and is not under or controlled by MSWindows programs or locations. The program and files normally live outside of MSWindows locations and are in drive letter \pmail and subdirs below and users must have proper rights to files and any user must have rights for read/write of all in his home mail box location and new mail box location.

There is a history a few threads back (Trouble moving to new machine) with which you were involved at some point.

Original installations were to default.  "User" appears later.

There are unresolved permission issues as per Brian Fluet's post.

PMail requires the follow structure, by default is is

c:\pmail\Programs             the program files
c:\pmail\mail                       the pmail.usr file
c:\pmail\mail\admin            the default user
c:\pmail\mail\USER1
.                                           the users
.
c:\pmail\mail\USERn

Note when the path is specified in pconfig.exe that pconfig.exe is a 16-bit program and long filenames may or may not be accepted.  I would use the 8 character format, i.e. c:\docume~1\Alluse~1\docume~2\~n  when setting the HOME and NEW mail directory via pconfig.exe.  YMMV

One other thing, the pmail.usr file in this setup should be located in the root of the mailboxes i.e. in the c:\docume~1\Alluse~1\docume~2 directory.

FWIW, I have no idea what you are trying to do here though, Pegasus Mail cannot share mailboxes except when using IMAP4 and Mercury and WinXP can share any directory.  It's just not all that easy to do.  ;-)

I have no idea what this means, since the name "Admin"  is simply the name of a directory.  It has nothing at all to do with the rights assigned to the user.  That said if this was installed using the admin user then user of the c:\pmail\mail directory and subdirectories must be given the all rights to this directory.

All you need to do while running as the admin user is select the c:\pmail\mail directory and right click to select properties.  You can then assign the rights to the directory by selecting the "Security (XPFSE)" tab.

That said if you are using the broken WinXP Home then you need that use some sort of outside utility to get this tab to show up.

Is there a way to transfer Admin's mailbox to User?

More than one way but all may have been complicated by attempts to move or place things in non standard and non default locations/paths.

First read Help:

The Folders Menu

The Folders menu is available on the menu bar when the folder manager window is the current window. It contains less-frequently used options for managing your folders.

Add mailbox to list:  This command allows you to add another mailbox to your folder view. You will be prompted to enter a directory or a username which Pegasus Mail should use to locate the mailbox. It will then proceed to add that mailbox as a root entry in the Folder Manager window, and will add any recognizable mail folders from that location into that root entry. Mailboxes added to the Folder Manager in this way are just like your own mailbox - you can read messages, create folders, move messages around (including between mailboxes) and so on.

Examples of uses for this command include:

* Secretaries who need to access the boss's mailbox while he's away on business

* System administrators who need to troubleshoot a user's mailbox

And the view the commadline options and description of the -ms function also. It may be easier to just run as Admin and then forward unedited/bounce the messages to the correct address for User.

You also did not state if the message were still *.cnm raw message files or if they had been moved to a real folder and are now contained in .pmm and .pmi folder pairs or a combination of both.

It may be necessary to first return everything to proper default locations and who knows what damage may have been done during all the gyrations trying to get OS to share files in the MSWindows way when what was actually necessary was to leave windows out of the  picture and just work within  ..pmail\mail\<user> only.

The problem is that, when I click on a message folder, the individual message headers don't appear in the upper-right-hand pane, the way they do when I'm logged in as Admin.
I can view the messages in "New mail" and "Junk or suspicious mail", but not in any of the other message folders.

  1. Right-click on ADMIN icon
  2. Click on Sharing and Security...
  3. There are three tabs:  General, Sharing, and Customize.
  4. The General tab is up.
  5. There's an Attributes section with a "Read-only" checkbox.
  6. The Read-only box has a green square inside it, which I think means "unspecified".
  7. I tried clicking the box until it was empty (not read-only) and applying that to all files inside the folder, but it didn't help (obviously, since it's not about other users).
  8. I open the Sharing tab.
  9. There's a "Local sharing and security" section.
  10. It says "To share this folder with other users of this computer only, drag it to the Shared Documents folder.".  That's why I was messing with Shared Documents before.
  11. The section also has a second paragraph, which says
  12. "To make this folder and its subfolders private so that only you have access, select the following checkbox."
  13. There's a checkbox (empty/unselected) labeled "Make this folder private", but it's disabled.
  14. There's also a "Network sharing and security" section, but I assume that's not relevant to local users.

That's all I've been able to find so far.  I don't see "Security (XPFSE)" anywhere, nor have I seen the things bfluet mentioned in a post from another thread, which I quoted in my first post on this thread.  I'm running XP Pro SP3.
