Re-Install time

> As soon as I make the decision to have a 2nd USB device, then I don't have a single USB device.

Agreed, and that is why the make very small portable hard drives.  I got one USB disk drive, 110 GBytes, that I throw in my bag.  These are much more reliable the a typical USB stick and one of these days when the cost goes down I'll probably trade it in for a digital drive.

Okay, defeat time.

I'm going to re-install the current version on the thumb drive.

I have a backup from last week.

That backup has the complete subdirectory for Pegasus in a subdirectory of its own.

Question: Can I fish prior E-mail messages and addresses from the backup directory ?

Suggestions are welcome, and will be read, studied, and incorporated into my plans.

Thank you.

Whatever your name is: Here's a list of file names and extensions.

At least pull the mail directory from the thumb drive and place it somewhere else before you start.

Just another thought.  If you want to keep your email on a thumb drive why not use a dedicated unit for that purpose only.

Excellent observation; Excellent question; Excellent suggestion.

It has great merit.

Here is why I don't want to do that; in a word: Expansion.

Call it...

  • Feature Creep
  • Balloon Data
  • Over-utilization

...or whatever, the purpose of the thumb drive (for me at least) is to make my data (and apps)  immediately accessible via one USB port. This is because  I go places where I'm a guest and not a resident.

The process (which destroys the very benefit of what I'm attempting) starts with exactly what you're suggesting; i.e., get one more device.

As soon as I make the decision to have a 2nd USB device, then I don't have a single USB device.

The moment the mind has changed from a single device to multiple devices, then comes the 3rd one.

Give it awhile and then the 4th one enters into your life.

Allow that process to continue and you have unmanageable data with so many thumb drives that you can't keep things straight.

In many people's lives, this has already happened. e.g., the computer, which originally brought them more time, more freedom, and an extreme increase in personal convenience, now controls their time, their money, their space, their very thinking; indeed has changed from a device of convenience to the central device of inconvenience.

For me, the way to stop that process is to never let it start.

Therefore, there will be no 2nd USB stick.

And yes, I know that this risks (and indeed, just resulted in) the very disaster I had this week.

My response to that will be to switch over to a nightly backup scheme instead of a weekly scheme.

The facts being what they are, the thing for me is to have one device, and one only. The 2nd drive, as you've suggested, which is a good solution to the problem at hand, would be, for me, the defining step over the slippery slope.

Of course, your mileage may vary; and that's fine. It's just a step that I have to take for the feeble brain I have.

Thanks for the tips about the backup.

I have backups from a week ago, and another one from two weeks ago.

If anyone has a step-by-step procedure for fishing previous E-mails and addresses and so on from a different drive, subdirectory, etc., that could help me a lot.

I think I'm going to have to install a fresh copy of Pegasus onto this thumb drive, because when I just copied the previous directory structure, something really weird happens, and the entire file structure goes flakey, and whatever happens, well, it just doesn't work. I would really like to connect with a place of USB experts. Really, these things should last more than a few months.

"James" will be fine if you need a name.

If that's your website, wow; very nice (!)

I really like the that kind webpage. It is extremely well organized, and it is written in a way that can be zoomed for easier reading while still staying on the screen.

I you're not the one who wrote it, then send the author my approval rating.

I really wish more sites were designed like that one.

It’s a

matter of working through the mailbox systematically using the file names and

extensions list suggested by IDW.

For example

files in the new mail folder are single files with the extension CNM.

Mail

folders each have two files, a PMM (message) file and a PMI (index file) – Same

file name but with the different extensions for the pair.

Address

book files have the extensions PMR and PM! .

Other

useful files are your POP and SMTP definition files with the extension PND and

your recently used addresses file is WINPMFUA.PM.
