Enable Passwords for Usernames

I just can add to Olaf's contribution that you can avoid the users to have to enter their username when they run Pegasus Mail, their PM username and Windows username have to be the same. Just add to each user a user's ev called pmuser and set it to %username% (this can be easily done via gpo).

With this and the right ntfs rights the user will only see their own mailbox and will be able to send mails to others.

Regards

Hi,

Is it possible to enable password for Pegasus usernames? I am wanting to use Pegasus Mail for a small company of around 15 employees and all email will be internal. However, if we send an email to a specific employee, I don't want other employees eavesdropping on other employees emails. Is it possible to setup some kind of security?

I am using Windows Server 2003 and all employees login to our server via Terminal Services through Remote Desktop Connection.

Please advise on how to proceed

UPDATE: If I enable security on those MAIL folders in the Installation Directory it blocks access to Pegasus Mail.

Example: User Bob has privileges to access the "Bob" folder and John has privileges to access the "John" folder but no other folder inside MAIL.

When John logs in to his Account... if he opens Pegasus Mail and enters the username "Bob" the software will automatically close and will only open if he enters the username for the only folder he has access to which is John...

Would this be the proper way to setup the security that I want?

There is no way to use passwords in Pegasus mail unless running Novell.  This is not possible until the actual mail files and folders are encrypted, and I have no idea if this will ever happen.

The files currently are simply ASCII files and can be read with a word processor.  A password for Pegasus Mail would be worse than useless, it would provide an indication of security, without providing any protection at all.

You can use the servers rights and privileges to remove the read rights on the other users mailboxes.  Personally I use Mercury to actually send and receive the mail so that none of the users other than the server system admin and Mercury have the rights to any of the users mailboxes other than their own.

When running with a Netware server this is a lot easier.

Without Novell Netware ... no.

With Windows you have to change rights on the directories of the mailboxes. All users should be able to create files in the others users directories. A user should have full rights in his own mailboxdirectory. And Pegasus needs to read PMAIL.USR, which normaly resides in C:\PMAIL\MAIL (depending on installation ... the directory where the mailboxdirectories of the users are in). Thats all they need.
